2009 Draft Thread

Postby smitty » Fri May 15, 2009 18:41:53

A Phillies type high draft choice. Not a pitcher this time, but a position player with tools (I especially like the above average speed while running with a brace on his knee -- that's always a good thing).

A high ceiling type Texas High schooler with some injury issues and off field character concerns.

Hamels, Drabek, Savery and share at least one similar feature with this kid.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Hit PLAY on his MP3 player and you might hear...
Garth Brooks or some other form of country music.

That's a pretty big red flag on the character.

I didn't search too deep, but I wonder if the character issue is something minor blown out of proportion or Clay Buchholz stealing computers from school type of issue.

Paging Steagles. This paragraph came from a 2009 Phillies Draft Preview over at the Sickels site you frequent. Is this a guy with connections? What does he mean "I've connected them with...."

Looking at trends, I think we'll see a mix of athletic position players, tall unpolished prep pitchers, and tall, powerful college pitchers. While Wolever mixed in more college players in most of his drafts, 2008 marked a year of heavy investment in prep players, a possible trend. After the huge college investment in the 2005 draft, thanks to a small budget, Wolever has gradually trended away from that preference, as Vance Worley was the only early college player taken last year, and he was a re-draft from their 2005 selection of him. As such, I'm predicting they go for a high-ceiling prep player, either a pitcher or position player. I've connected them with Nevada prep first baseman Jeff Malm, who has risen too high for them now, Arizona prep righty Trent Stevenson, Texas prep outfielder/lefty Slade Heathcott, and Florida prep shortstop Devan Marrero, all good options for a team that should be willing to go overslot to make up for their lack of a first rounder. Look for other options like LeVon Washington, Reggie Williams, Jake Marisnick, Mychal Givens, Michael Heller, and Brooks Pounders to match up at various points.

Strasburg in today's Mountain West playoff game:

7.2IP, BB, 6K's, left in the 8th with a "rib injury"

From espn:

Not truly "on the farm," but expected top draft pick Stephen Strasburg gave the Nationals organization a scare when he left his Mountain West Conference tournament start in the eighth inning Wednesday. However, it turned out to be nothing more than a "back cramp," likely due to the hot weather in Fort Worth, Texas. The San Diego State pitcher had been his usual solid self until that point, allowing no runs and three hits with six strikeouts. The Aztecs beat New Mexico 2-1.

Goldstein Rd 1 Mock

He has Purke dropping all the way to the Yankees. I wrote about that a few weeks ago and touched on it again yesterday, that he'd be the ideal candidate to drop because of his bonus demands. If the Phillies do their due diligence here and can sign him for $3M, and he slides to them in the 2nd, they should take him without thinking twice.

Sounds more like "I don't want to throw a ton of pitches in this POS tournament."

greg (Philly): draft theory question - for teams that lost their first round pick, could they end up being better off if they start taking "signability" guys in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds, and spread that first round money they didn't spend around?

SportsNation Keith Law: Yes, they could, if enough of those guys fall to them. I've heard the Phillies on Kyrell Hudson and Slade Heathcott, both of whom would probably want more than slot for the Phillies' first pick (which is in the second round).

The Phils could use some guys who can hit the stinkin' ball in their system. Brown and Taylor look really good of course. Marson and Donald are good prospects but they're really scuffling so far this season. As are D'Arnaud and some of the other guys. Harmon actually looked like one of the better hitting guys at one point recently.

It's way early yet and Marson, Donald and some others can certainly pick it up. But the Phils ain't exactly loaded with thumpers right now.

So Virginia finished 42-12, won the ACC Tournament. They not only don't host a regional, they get sent cross country to the UC-Irvine regional as the 2 seed and their opening round game is against 3 seed San Diego State and Steven Strasburg. Whatever the word is for worse than screwed, and they got it.
