Article on SS jumping straight to the majors, but I'm actually posting it because of the fact at the end about Xavier Nady being the last player to make the college->MLB jump. Pretty misleading fact b/c he only got 1 AB in a Sept call up then did the usual time in the minors. I believe it was him and Tagg Bozied that were supposed to be the hitting cornerstones in what was a stacked Padres system at the time. Bozied and Nady as hitters, then the big 3 pitchers: Tankersley, Cyr, and this guy named Peavy.

Gillaspie got an AB last year for the Giants. Detwiler got an IP for the Nats the year he was drafted.

If the Nats were super smart, which they're not, they'd do what has been suggested by KLaw I believe it was.

Draft him, and the day after the draft, offer him something like $18M, split between a ML deal and an up front cash bonus. And tell him that for every day he waits on the deal, its reduced by $250,000. If he waits until August 15th, he can take about $3M or he can go back into the draft next year. His leverage will never be higher, if he goes to Indy Ball and re-enters next year's draft he has even less leverage. The Nats should take that to the press. Offering him $18M up front shatters all previous deals by almost 100% I do believe. If he balks, it will tarnish his rep and the Nats will save face if he doesn't sign.

Also, the sooner he signs, the quicker they plug him into the rotation.

IIRC Ariel Prieto jumped right to the majors

Conor and Ross both played in the minors first and then were Sept. call ups.

Prieto went straight to the bigs, but he wasn't a typical draftee.

Ryan Zimmerman played in the minors after the draft, but was a Sept call-up and never has gone back down.

John Olerud, if I remember correctly, never spent any time in the minors until he was in his late 30s.

Yea, I'm pretty sure he's the last true guy to skip the minors.

Tony Gwynn gets it right:

“If this was me,” Gwynn said, “I don’t think I would even pitch anymore this year.”

Gwynn thinks it would be in the best interest of everybody to shut Strasburg down after the collegiate season.

“Me personally, investing what I knew I had to invest in a guy like Stephen,” Gwynn said, “I’m not going to rush him.”

Any chance that Tommy Mendonca slips to us or is he as good as gone? I haven't been able to see a real definitive projection for where he's going to go yet.

.320/.429/.691 with 20 HR's and 5 doubles so far. 50 K's to 23 BB.

His uncle actually played for the Phillies. He's got a hole in his swing that results in K's, but he's got legit power and has improved his K and BB rates.

I think its really impossible to know who is going to be there at the end of the 2nd round. Projecting the first 25 picks is hard enough

I agree, but I'm not really looking for a specific pick here, just bouncing an idea around to make sure I'm not completely off base thinking he might be available.

Who is his uncle?
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Played in the system briefly. I didn't search that until now. From the Fresno Bio they made it seem like his uncle made the show.

Wow. He didn't last long but it's an honor just to play I guess.

FWIW, PGCrosschecker has Mendonca at #80 on its Top 250 Draft Prospects as of 5/1. The third base prospects at the beginning of the year were Donald, Mattair, Overbeck and Hewitt. I'd have no problem taking Mendonca at #75.

It's really unfathomable people are so stupid, but here we go:

Eric - NJ: The MLB draft is in inverse order of regular season finish, correct. If so, why wouldn't the Pirates, Houston, Ariz, Oakland, Cle, and Balt all try their hardest to "play their kids" this year in an effort to draft Strasburg. Would make sense, no?

SportsNation Keith Law: It would make tremendous sense if Strasburg was in next year's draft instead of this one.

Eh, to be fair, it can be kinda confusing, MLB is the only league that holds their draft in-season.
