A recent decision by a San Diego high school basketball player may have a lasting impact on the future of the international baseball free-agent market. This week, hoops phenom Jeremy Tyler, a high school junior, announced he would drop out of school in order to play pro basketball internationally. Several baseball agents with experience in the international market agree that it's inevitable that an American-born baseball player will eventually exploit a similar opportunity by taking advantage of a loophole in Major League Baseball's amateur signing system.
Juan Urbina, the 16-year-old son of former major league pitcher Ugueth Urbina, is considered one of the top prospects coming out of Venezuela this signing period.
NEW YORK (AP) -- Major League Baseball's amateur draft is shifting to prime time.
The commissioner's office said Tuesday that this year's draft will start at 6 p.m. on June 9 and be held at the studios of the MLB Network in Secaucus, N.J.
There will be 111 picks on the first day, which includes the first three rounds mixed in with two compensation rounds.
Rounds 4-30 are scheduled tentatively for June 10, with the remaining 20 rounds the following day. The last two days will be held by telephone conference call.
