2009 Draft Thread

Postby FTN » Sat Mar 28, 2009 15:12:56

San Diego State's Stephen Strasburg strikes out 14 batters over eight innings — his sixth double-digit strikeout game in six starts — and allows three hits and two runs (both earned) on a windy night in Fort Worth, Texas, with temperatures in the 40s. The Aztecs' offense pounds out 17 hits and the result is an 11-5 Mountain West Conference victory at TCU.

SDSU (17-8, 5-2) and TCU (14-8, 2-2) continue the three-game series with games Saturday and Sunday.

Strasburg (5-0) allows a wind-aided leadoff homer by TCU's Ben Carruthers, then retires 14 batters in a row, 10 of them by strikeout. By the way, Strasburg began the season ranked No. 15 on SDSU's career strikeout list with 180. He has 88 strikeouts for the season )with just 8 walks), giving him 268 career strikeouts. That ranks third in school history, behind only Bruce Billings (304) and Rick Navarro (299).

You'd think that would be it for him. He's coming up on 100 pitches now.

I forgot most of the line as they were running it down. I figured they'd pull him just because of the score.

Oh. I'm replying to a Steagles post. Um. OK.

What's the appeal in consistently taking a contrarian position?

it's not that they're in a different class of prospects, my beef is that borg's being put on an unapproachable pedestal, when the reality is that gibson could very well have the longer, more productive career.

borg's 21 and he throws 101 MPH. he's good, maybe great, but there's way too much injury risk for him to be talked about as if he can't miss, and it pisses me off that the only discussion in this thread seems to be about who can get strasborg's knob wetter.

what's the value of a person who can only tell you what you already know?

That's not what you're doing, though. The impression I have, and I think others share this as well, is that you take the contrarian position so that you can have that "I'm the only one who thought X, while everyone said Y" moment. You make enough of those guesses hitting on one every so often, then take it as validation of your "method" or whatever you want to call it.

Just looking through the Miami stats for the first time in 2 weeks and Yasmani Grandal, our catcher, is raking. He's only a sophmore (drafted in the 27th round by the Red Sox in 2007), but he's got a .999 OPS going into this weekend with 8 HR's already. I'm not all that familiar with next year's college draft class, but he's got to be positioning himself for a top 5 round selection right now if he finishes the season strong.

i don't hit 'every so often'. i see things in a way that noone else does, and i see things before they happen. floppy's coven doesn't really see the value in that, but that's for them to hash out.

i'll leave it at that.

If you weren't such a pompous ass, quick to wave your few "hits" in everyone's face, I think people would be more receptive to what you have to say.
