2009 Draft Thread

lolololol john lannan is a bitch

from the second article:

"He throws 100, and he strikes out college hitters," Lannan said. Then, realizing how the second part of that sentence sounded, he added, "I hear his stuff is unbelievable."

Luke Bailey is going to have Tommy John surgery. Injury came possibly after he decided to take off the catching gear and take a rare turn on the mound.

...so its draft day and 74 names have been called, none of whom is Luke Bailey. You're the Phillies and you're up at pick #75. Do you try to cut a deal with the guy for say low first round money? BA had him as #18 in their mid-season ratings.

i think they have to take the best player on the board. it's still too early to know if anyone is going to drop like a rock, but they need to be willing to step up and pay someone.

my thought?

we're going really cheap in this draft.

i sure hope we sign one or two big guns this summer in Latin America, but im not holding my breath.

The Nationals will draft blue-chip pitching prospect Stephen Strasburg, according to former GM Jim Bowden.

"Washington is going to draft Strasburg. The decision has already been made. It was made when I was there," Bowden, who resigned from the post in early March, told ESPN 710 in a radio interview. While it isn't surprising given the San Diego State product's 100 mph arm. However, Strasburg and his agent are reportedly demanding a $50 million contract, which is about $40 million more than Mark Prior's rookie record contract in 2001. It's curious why Bowden would give away this information, should it be true. One thing is for sure - the Nationals could use help just about everywhere at this point.

I'm still pretty optimistic. Our new GM is plenty petty enough to want to show that his front office can do all that Arbuckle can do. Plus, I'm kinda figuring they threw Wolever a bone to stay since he really didn't get a promotion out of it.

From KLaw's twitter

Mike Leake threw 138 pitches last night. Some coaches just don't learn, do they?

Leake wanted to come out for the ninth inning despite having thrown 114 pitches through eight.

"I had done well the first eight, why not come out for the ninth and see what I could do?"

thoughts on rex brothers? i like him, but i'd guess he is off the board before the phils pick. seems like he's been getting more attention.

I was reading about Rex Brothers earlier, but I don't really have an informed opinion on him.

Just checking in on Miami baseball, stats were before today's game (loss at BC):

2 for this year:
Kyle Bellamy-closer-37 IP, 54 K, 18 BB, 20 H, .159 batting avg. against.

I'm not a huge fan of his because he really can get wild, but he might be a first round pick.

Ryan Jackson-SS-.261/.368/.387, 3 HR, 7 2B's

I don't know, but I remember reading that JE on philliesphans liked him and said something to the effect of, I don't care what his numbers are, but there are the numbers, so make your own call. He was really hyped up preseason, but he obviously hasn't come through with the offense. The defense is exceptional though.

One for next year:
Yasmani Grandal-C-.276/.385/.605, 14 HR, 8 2B's

Switch hitting catcher with plus defense. Sign me up. I think he's going top 20 next year.

I saw the commit list for Virginia today and noticed a Robert Amaro, 1B, Penn Charter HS. Is that Ruben's son? Is he draft eligible? I assume he'll go to college, but is he any good?

Since we were talking about Brandon Workman in this thread - it appears to me that he is currently out of the UTexas rotation. Not clear to me if it is injury related or performance related (he had a string of pretty bad starts).

Edit: It *is* performance related.

Texas freshman Taylor Jungmann is getting his first start in Big 12 play in place of Brandon Workman.

Pitching coach Skip Johnson said Workman is “battling through the process and is fighting hard to get his form back to the beginning of the season.”

Article on SS jumping straight to the majors, but I'm actually posting it because of the fact at the end about Xavier Nady being the last player to make the college->MLB jump. Pretty misleading fact b/c he only got 1 AB in a Sept call up then did the usual time in the minors. I believe it was him and Tagg Bozied that were supposed to be the hitting cornerstones in what was a stacked Padres system at the time. Bozied and Nady as hitters, then the big 3 pitchers: Tankersley, Cyr, and this guy named Peavy.
