The team always gets off to a terrible start. You have to wait until July at least and then do you really trust Amaro to be the guy pulling the trigger on deals? Let's hope he learned more from Gillick than from Wade.

They had a nice April this season, though. Which probably explains why they won 92 games instead of 86.

15-13 isn't that great. They were basically a 500ish team until May 24.

It's not great but on the heels of those grim 10-18 Aprils they were having most of the decade, it was a reasonable springboard for what's been pretty much proven to be a second-half team.

The Mets are favorites for Krod, Fuentes, Manny, Javier Vasquez, Matt Holiday, and everyone else.

Steve Phillps predicts they will go 144-18 next year.

I'm aware of that, and that it's a big risk. But if you can't roll the dice after winning a championship, especially when it's rolling the dice on getting younger and cheaper, albeit with players who've already demonstrated some quality play at the major league level, when can you?

I also realize Werth batting fifth is not ideal, but I think adding Lowe to the current rotation makes the pitching so strong that the loss in offensive production overall would be offset.

Yeah, I had wondered about that also. Just from watching it, it didn't appear all that fast and Google confirmed this

Hopefully, during this process, the Manny Ramirez situation will get resolved. If Ramirez leaves the Dodgers, I then would approach the Dodgers with this proposal: Howard, Ryan Madson and Geoff Jenkins for Matt Kemp, James Loney and James McDonald.

I don't think we are getting enough for Howard and Madson in this deal. As much as I like the three players you are proposing I think we could get more if we split up Madson and Howard. Alot of teams are going to be calling on Madson as a closer which means we could get probably the equivlent of two of what you are suggesting above. Now shop Ryan Howard and I am positive we could get at least two of the types above plus. Jenkins is not that expensive for a guy who still should be considered an everyday outfielder at 7 mill there will be teams that woudl take a chance on him (with us maybe picking up 2-3 mill of his contract)

I know there is alot of money being saved but just because we save money does not mean Amaro will make the best moves with the extra dollars. Need I point the money saved on Abreu and the way it was spent.

Good post and maybe you're right. I think it's very hard to tell what kind of a market there is for Howard. He offers ungodly production but also has some pretty obvious negatives, and some teams that otherwise could be interested will be wary of his camp's previous talk about a paradigm-changing contract.

I maybe undersell Howard and Madson a bit because I want to get rid of Jenkins' contract badly - to free up more money to go after another 1-2 caliber starter to pair with Hamels. I just don't think Myers ever will be a consistent 2nd starter, so I'd like to see an upgrade in the rotation. And recall how after the Braves added Maddux to Smoltz and Glavine, they went to the postseason for another decade. I'm almost always willing to sacrifice some offense if it can bring a true upgrade in pitching in return.

Partially Gammons and then rotoworld I think takes some liberties with who "could" be interested:

According to ESPN's Peter Gammons, some Dodger officials have spread the word that Russell Martin will either be traded or moved to third base.

If a whisper gets repeated by enough people, there's probably some truth to it. It seems ludicrous that the Dodgers would really move Martin out from behind the plate. He had no real business winning a Gold Glove in 2007, but he's a more-than-adequate defensive catcher and the Dodgers have no internal possibilities to replace him. Moving him to third and then signing Jason Varitek to catch would do significant damage to their chances of making it back to the postseason in 2009. If they do opt to make him available in trade, the Red Sox, Mets, Blue Jays, Phillies, Astros, Marlins and Reds could show interest.

Um, I thought Russell Martin was one of the best defensive catchers in the game. WTF? He's not great at throwing out runners, so in terms of purely having an arm to gun guys, no. But he blocks a lot of balls and makes some nice plays behind the plate. Plus he had a 3.63 ERA with the Dodger staff this year, lowest among eligible catchers in the NL. Why is this even out there? Why would they have any remote interest in trading Martin?

The Nats are drunk. They're supposedly interested in Holliday and Teixeira

Scott Boras held court regarding Varitek this afternoon. He suggested Varitek should get a deal comparable to Jorge Posada's four-year, $52.4MM contract, which is ridiculous even for Boras

From mlbtr.

Insane. Varitek blows. If he gets $5 million a year he should be happy.

That is just unbelievable. Varitek should be playing on one year deals at this point.

If he'd be willing to sign an incentive laden deal, I'd be all for it. I'm biased though, because I Schill's one of my favorite players ever, even though he is a pompous ass.
