Manny will be a Phillies (version 3.11)

Postby Trent Steele » Sun Jul 27, 2008 13:23:36

I wouldn't even thing twice about it. Manny is not that much worse of a fielder than Holiday and everyone was ready to do that deal (don't give me the fielding stats because they are irrelevant for Bos. LF). Manny will cost more money but less in prospects. Why wouldnt you do that deal?
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

No. Burrell's better and Buckholz has lost faith in his fastball.

Burrell with a career OPS of .860, and manny with a career OPS of .999

Burrell's a lot better, you're right.

Wow. Burrell and Manny in the same outfield. In the Dewan plus/minus ratings, Manny has ranked 30th and 29th in MLB amongst left fielders the last two seasons and is 30th this year at - 16. Burrell has been 29th, 31st and is 26th this season. What's Garry Maddox doing?
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

I wouldn't want to do this deal if it were for Burrell. I agree with you and I'm sure the Phillies brass do as well

Right, because career numbers mean everything when you're comparing a 36 year-old to a 31 year-old.

Seriously, there are a lot of Phillies sites out there where you'd fit in much better than you do here. And you'd leave with pretty much everyone's best wishes.

The Burrell stuff is just made up and isnt the issue.

The issue is that if Manny is really available, the failure to get him is another indictment of the cheap mother fuckers that run this team

We're talking about a half-year rental, smart guy -- this year. Burrell's OPS+ is 151, Manny's is 140.

Right, and going off one year for Burrell makes a ton of senseDisregarding that his career OPS is 139 points better than Burrell is just stupid. I don't care if he's 5 years older, he's not slowing up much. Also, Burrell's numbers will revert back to his statistical mean next year.

I can't help being right about certain things. If you people don't see that manny ramirez is a better player than Burrell, there's nothing I can do.

I'm not sure you get the draft picks. You'd have to offer arbitration off a 20M salary and I'm not sure Manny turns a guarantee of 22-25M in arbitration down.

Yeah thats worth thinking about. But I don't think Manny wants a 1 year deal at this point.

I agree, he doesn't want a 1 year deal, but as a FA on the open market as a 36 year old DH/OF, what's his realistic market value? 3 years 18 mil per (54M)? Maybe less? Maybe just 2 years? If he takes arbitration, he gets half of that in one year and is a FA again in a year. It would at least make him stop and think. Bonds accepted arbitration from the Giants a few years back for that same reason.

Different question -- would this Phillies management even do it? Make it happen? Capable of making it happen or desiring it to happen? Why discuss a deal we all know will never come about?

The Mets will do it. Phillies won't.

What about Brett Myers for Manny? Helps offset some salary, Red Sox get Myers under contract next year cost controlled. If they straighten him out, could be a solid pitcher for them.
