Olympics

Anyone else think the rule that allows three over-23 players is silly? Is there a bit of logic I'm missing? Why not just make it an under-23 tournament?

I would imagine it's a compromise.

The Olympics would like everyone to be eligible so that it can have the best of the best. FIFA laughed hysterically at such a suggestion, both because of the effect on clubs and the possible threat to the prestige of the World Cup and said, here, you can have the U-23s.

The Olympics said, geez, that somewhat goes against our idea of having the best and these teams are patchy in quality. FIFA said, fine, here's 3 overages, now go away.

I was in Jamaica for around 10 days of the 2004 summer games. I can't remember if it was Negril or Ocho Rios but it was amazing how much more interested they were than Americans are- generally speaking. Wherever you went everybody was gathered around a tv or radio and I don't know how many medals they won but when they did win people were literally dancing in the streets. It was pretty awesome to see their national pride despite the reality of their living conditions. If you've never been there- talk about culture shock. I mean people can tell you about it but until you actually see it for yourself you can't even imagine how bad it really is.

Damn, Sunday morning is Team America time. Men's soccer followed by Men's hoops.

I guess I have to get drunk early tomorrow, so I make sure I go to bed as soon as the Phils end, giving me a chance to wake up by 7:45 and the Netherlands game. Yao vs. Team USA at 10. Oh my.

I've also considered this. I want to watch both those games but I go out on Saturdays almost as a matter of physical memory.

I just wish my DVR didn't break this week. I'd just record the games, wake up when I felt like it, and watch them. As it is, I think I'm stuck with the early wake up call.

The basketball game is a definite marquee matchup. I think this time around, like the first US dream team, the US team actually wants to win. I have no reason for thinking that though.

Oh. I'm replying to a Steagles post. Um. OK.

Foppe de Haan is facing some problems in preparing the Netherlands for their next match Olympic encounter. He won't be able to use his captain Roy Makaay, with midfielder Evander Sno also unavailable.

Makaay didn't make it to the final whistle of the match against Nigeria after a tackle on his ankle. He went to the hospital for a scans on Friday and, while his ankle isn't broken, it's severely bruised. Heerenveen forward Gerald Sibon is likely to replace Makaay for the match against the U.S.

Celtic midfielder Evander Sno received a red card and will be suspended for the upcoming match. It's not yet known how many matches he will be forced to watch from the sideline.

Why does Puerto Rico field its own team, but not Scotland?

Now I'll definitely be up for the games on Sunday. A girl at work bet me two beers at the Phils game that I wouldn't be able to do it. I have to text her every half hour from 5 to 7 to prove I was up.

Why Puerto Rico Has Its Own Team

Looks like the IOC has a lot of discretion in that matter. Also falls on the countries to ask, so maybe Scotland is just happy being part of Great Britain's team.
