Blech. Is there a buyout, or a straight "screw you and those 900 outs you made in 2008-2009"?

There's no WAY this is a good signing.

Feliz. Cannot. Hit. I see people gleeful over 20 homers... the AVERAGE player in MLB hits about 18 per 600 AB.

Feliz had 590 PA last year; given 590 PA, the average player in MLB would:

- make 35 fewer outs
- get 2 more hits
- hit 1 more double
- hit 1 more triple
- hit 4 fewer homers
- score 13 more runs
- drive in 1 fewer run
- walk 22 more times
- steal 7 more bases
- get caught 1 more time
- ground into 3 fewer double plays
- get hit by 4 more pitches
- hit 2 more sac flies
- get 3 more sac bunts
- put up an OPS 61 points higher (.769 to .708) - the same difference as between Grady Sizemore and Reds SS Alex Gonzalez.

Fortunately, we're only paying for his age 33, 34, and (optionally) 35 seasons. Really, those are prime years, no?

Well, hell! Let's sign him then!

you know, this would be a much better deal if we had been targeting groundball pitchers all along. hamels is a flyball pitcher if anything and doesn't allow too many balls in play in the first place. myers also gets a lot of Ks and doesn't allow many balls in play, and isn't a major groundball pitcher or flyball pitcher. moyer is a bit of a flyball pitcher, and eaton is just a gopherball pitcher. we just picked up a flyball/strikeout closer too. there's just not that many groundballs.

i honestly don't care about the effect on 2008. ultimately, it costs us about as much offensively as it helps us defensively. i just hate tying up these 2009 dollars. we really need to be putting ourselves in a position where we can overpay for free agent pitchers as they arrive, and if blaylock or glaus have really good seasons and seem healthy, we should be eager to pounce on them as free agents. this just handcuffs us in 2009 in a way that i'd like us to be flexible-- with our 3B opening and with our payroll.

I had the following exchange with Smitty about six weeks ago in the "Helms to the Marlins?" thread.

Smitty wrote:
MattS wrote:Smitty, I've long hoped that you were right that the Phillies secretly understand that OBP and SLG are more important than AVG and RBI. In fact, there certainly has been compelling evidence that this is so. But if they acquire Pedro Feliz, you better publicly say "nevermind" about that Razz

I already have that post ready to go if it happens! Laughing

It starts out: "What's all this fuss about on pace percentage?!?"

Smitty, I see you haven't posted in this thread yet. I want to hear about the fuss about on pace percentage! :)
