The Beatles

The Beatles

Postby FTN » Mon Nov 16, 2009 23:38:30

I think they deserve their own breakout thread.

The whole "where do they rank all time" argument is tired. But I often times think about where I put them in my own personal list. I've loved them since I was a child. My mom was a big Beatles fan, she played lots of their stuff when we'd drive around in the car. So I've been exposed to their music since I'm old enough to remember. I think its plausible to say I haven't gone more than a week in the last 15 years without listening to a Beatles song. Sometimes I've ranked them like 10th. Sometimes 2nd. I think at one point in college I considered them my favorite band ever.

I think right now I'd rank them #3.

If you like the Beatles and you have a bit of disposable income, I highly recommend you pick up the Stereo Remasters. If nothing else, you should grab Revolver, Sgt Pepper, White Album, and Abbey Road. But all of them really. Fantastic.

Also, lets do 10 fav songs.

01. A Day in the Life
02. Blackbird
03. I Want You (She's So Heavy)
04. Something
05. When I'm Sixty Four
06. Across the Universe
07. Dear Prudence
08. Drive My Car
09. Tomorrow Never Knows
10. Getting Better

Might be easier to list the songs you don't like all that much.

Sporcle has a quiz where you have to name every Beatles song in 18 minutes. It's really taxing on the brain. It's a little dodgy though because they include that Yellow Submarine album on which half the songs feature 0 Beatles. And the Past Masters are on there, I think, which isn't bad but it's not really canonical as far as the studio albums go.

Here's some favorites:

Tomorrow Never Knows
Something
Here Comes the Sun
I Am the Walrus
A Day In the Life
And Your Bird Can Sing
In My Life
Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me and My Monkey
All My Loving
She Came In Through the Bathroom Window

that's off the top of my head so it could be completely different. i'd say the top 5-7 are locks though.

Just heard Ticket to Ride on the radio today and was reminded how much I like the drums.

That's more of a random thought but it's a random Beatles thought.

I remember posting my 10 favorite Beatles songs in another thread somewhere.

I go back and forth between She's So Heavy and Got to Get You Into My Life as my favorites. The former just epitomizes Lennon's detached coolness while McCartney's Stax knockoff makes me incredibly happy every time those horns start blaring.

I realize it's not cool to like things that are popular and that the Beatles wrote very little if any bad music so it's hard to fault people for pullin out the most obscure track in attempt to be more hip than the next guy like you can when they do it with other bands, but seriously, no one thinks Let it Be is one of their favorite Beatles songs?

I like Harrison's guitar solo on it, but other than that it's pretty bombastic.
