The Beatles

Seems like kind of the same concept, songwise, as Hey Jude, which I just prefer is all.

Is bombastic bad?

not necessarily, but when it comes to the Beatles the only "epic" stuff I like a lot is the Abbey Road medley. I think "All You Need Is Love" is okay an "Hey Jude" is great but drags. I think two-minute songs like "Eleanor Rigby" and "Yesterday" say more about love and humanity than their big songs ever could. So bombastic isn't bad, but with the Beatles it's not their strongest suit. They weren't Queen.

Woody wrote:I realize it's not cool to like things that are popular and that the Beatles wrote very little if any bad music so it's hard to fault people for pullin out the most obscure track in attempt to be more hip than the next guy like you can when they do it with other bands, but seriously, no one thinks Let it Be is one of their favorite Beatles songs?

I did list Get Back. (Love that Billy Preston solo!)

One thing about the Beatles that I think is unusual was their irreverence towards themselves. By this I mean how many bands are, at the height of their powers, going to release an almost novelty tune like Yellow Submarine, or let Ringo put Octopus's Garden on Abbey Road?

I guess it was just the way the times and technology were, but there are millions of recording gaffes in their songs. It's pretty amazing how sloppy the takes and edits sound sometimes.

Of all the amazing things about the Beatles, the things that most amaze me are (1) the fact that they only made albums for 7 years before breaking up; and (2) Paul was 28 and George was 27 when they broke up.
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

Funny, today I just bought the 2 DVD set of the Beatles' appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show. Just amazing to see an audience react like that towards any act, and really, landmark television.

What really gets me is how different live TV production values are. Sullivan gave his crew directions while he was on TV. Live. Also, it's interesting how the Beatles themselves reacted to the screaming girls and everything. They range from finding humor to almost having this "what's wrong with you?" look.

My favorite Beatle is George Harrison, and my favorite song is Here Comes the Sun.

My Top 10:

1. Here Comes the Sun
2. Got to Get You Into My Life
3. Tomorrow Never Knows
4. All You Need is Love
5. Something
6. I Want You/She's So Heavy
7. Taxman
8. Elanor Rigby
9. Revolution (the non-random noise one)
10. I Saw Her Standing There

listening to George's All Things Must Pass album as you bump this. Probably my favorite solo Beatles album. He really hit his stride toward the end of their career. Had the two best songs on Abbey Road, which was the last one they recorded. I can't imagine how floored I'd have been hearing the White Album when it came out and hearing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" for the first time. Kind of blew his own bandmates away with that one.

If I had to do my top 10 list over again, I'd probably change like half of them right now. Then again, it's so hard to narrow it down to 10 songs.

Also, Stevie Wonder's version of "We Can Work It Out" is better than the Beatles' own, IMO.

But yes, All Things Must Pass is probably one of my top five favorite albums.

Very hard to pick 10 songs

Here's 10 I really like in no particular order

Back in the USSR
Here Comes the Sun
Maxwell's Silver Hammer
Across the Universe
Strawberry Fields Forever
I Saw Her Standing There
All My Loving
Good Morning, Good Morning
All You Need is Love
With a Little Help from My Friends

I received the stereo remasters for my birthday last year. It's worth the money.

I prefer Joe C0cker's "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window" to the Beatles'. That might be my only preferred cover.

Siouxsie and the Banshees do a good "Helter Skelter" though.

I hate the BeeGees, but they did a pretty good cover of Nowhere Man in that Sgt Peppers movie that flopped in the 70s. That movie is hilariously bad, btw. Used to be a favorite of mine to watch while WERTZ'd.

Realized I already wrote my top ten. Like SK said, that kind of thing changes all the time. There's too many great songs.

The Ringo songs are a guilty pleasure. I actually like Octopus' Garden a lot.
