Pet Peeves a new volume:

After living in Delaware for 5 years, where the whole state has the same area code, I have gone back to saying area code when I give people my phone number. I kept my north jersey cell phone number so when i'd just give them the number as "908-295...." They'd automatically just put a 302 in front of it and when got past the 7th digit I could see their brains break and they'd have to delete the whole thing and we'd start over.
man I drew all these penises for nothing - housh

Bucky wrote:you used to specifically say "Area Code" if it was someone non-local. If not, it was only seven-digit dialing!

And then you could run the whole sequence together pretty much, with only a brief pause after the first triplet. I was the IVyridge exchange, so everything started with "I V"

you'd say "eye vee 3 0720"

Used to be if you lived in the same exchange, you only had to dial the last 4. So I live in Warminster, one of whose exchanges used to be OSbourne 5, if you lived at OSbourne 5 3476, calling someone at OSbourne 5 2190, you could just dial 2190.

There is a cool website trying to compile all the exchange names for posterity here: http://ourwebhome.com/TENP/TENproject.html

I want to underscore that this system was long out of use when I was a kid - I was born in 78. That's 1978, wise asses. ;)

We had a "party line" with our neighbors for a while. SUnset-9-2392. Pretty kewl.

We did too. When my sister was a teenager, it had to suck to be the other party, cuz she was always on the phone.

when you're driving in the passing lane, clearly moving faster than the right lane but allowing a good 3 second follow rule, and people feel the need to pass you in the right lane and then get right back in front of you. good job gaining that half-second advantage dip shit.

I once had a woman roll down a window and yell at me for going 35 in a 25 on a normal small suburban street. She was mad that I was going too slow. I think if I could kill one person with my mind right now it would be her.

Traffic lights on 422 in Lebanon are timed almost exactly so you can ride a green wave across town at 25mph. I feel I'm the only person who realizes this from all the idiots revving to 35, catching the tail of the red light ahead, and then trying to get to 45 for the next one. Combine this with the half-mile long passing lane that terminates in left turn only and results in idiots blocking the turn because they thought they would just pass the mile-long line of traffic rolling through them and you have the biggest reasons for the simmering pool of rage I've been building.

Got tailed last night for going 40 in a 40...the way the lights are timed you never have to stop if you do this. It's like people don't notice these things.
