Re the topic....I'm a long term failed lapsed Catholic, but Pope Francis is amazing. I can't say I'm a believer, but he has awakened that long dormant something that sticks with you when you are raised Catholic. I think it's cultural more than religious, but it's too real for me to pretend it isn't there.

yeah, close to my feeling. although most who think they're atheist are actually agnostic. at least that's where i ended up.

i have a lifetime invested in the catholic church. from my early school years when i thought i'd become a priest- to my high school years when i started to notice all the evident hypocrisy- then to my catholic college years, when i flat out became a denier to all the beliefs. so it's pretty awkward when mostly all of your relatives and friends that you've grown up with are still devout catholics.

so pope frank is pretty great. not because i'll ever jump back on the bandwagon- the basis of my (dis)beliefs are philosophically strong- but because i want all my aforementioned friends and relatives to have a leader who preaches the beliefs of all that i see are good a true.

so, go Pope Frank!!

not surprising given what seems similar upbringings at least in respect to churches. my whole family is catholic and i still get pestered about being an atheist. i've been an atheist for 10 years and this past summer when i was visiting my grandmother asked me when i was going to be done with that "phase"...
