no shit. that has no bearing on the discussion. and keep in mind, it was put on here with no context other than "this is good", so it should stand on its own merit, not whether its audience is a bunch of people who pat themselves on the back for being smarter than everyone.

and if the target audience is other athiests, what's the point? it's so lazy to make a shitty animated video to get people who already believe in it to say "Yeah!!!"

The Dude has this one nailed on the head.

There are times when atheists do need to speak up. When the schoolboard chairperson is an avowed Evangelical is pushing prayer in school or history books that treat the Bible as historical fact or Creationist science text books...

Or hell, when they are putting God on our money or making kids tacitly "pledge allegiance" to God... I can get behind that.

But this is just pandering to one audience while insulting oh, I don't know, billions of people and making light of their deeply held beliefs to no other purpose than to say, "Look how right I am!"

Blech.

I didn't take it that way, else I would have never shared it. I think it makes use of caricature ("PUT DOWN THAT JET FIGHTER!") in order to communicate that it's intentionally exaggerating the portrayals in order to hilight dissonace in the world's differing religious views, and the common negative consequences borne of such dissonance, without getting bogged in the nuance which would extend this to the length of a Kafka novel*.

(I'm not sure who Kafka is, or if s/he even wrote novels, but I'm trying to cleverly allude to something that is really, really lengthy. Maybe I should write for a baseball blog!)

I think he wrote short stories mostly. They were "Kafkaesque" which is convenient because his name was Kafka. I think he wrote some novels but I'm not sure how long they were. He didn't finish some of them and ended up burning a lot of his stuff before he died.

I've read a few Kafka stories. They weren't very long. Strange dude though.

This is so dumb, but if you wanna judge everything without context, be my guest. I agree with Bucky. The video was wholly hyperbolic so it's not surprising the atheist is over the top, too.

The fact that it's seen as insulting to point out obvious facts about religion and well established sociological theories on the evolution of religion is weird to me, I guess.

Here's something insulting about a belief system. At least it wasn't preachy, tho, ughhhhhhhhh.

Kafka: short, hypnotic novels. 3, or 2 & 2/3, depending on how you score them. His Statue of Liberty wields a sword, rather than scales.

Mann: among other things, wrote The Magic Mountain. A mountain of pages. Long, long book. There are characters, but you'll never get to really know them. He makes fun of religion, and just about everything else, but ironically, his book is no fun at all. You'll sleep a lot.
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

late to party/not enough time to catch up on whole thread - born-raised catholic up til 6th grade and then stopped going. 'accepted Christ' age 15 at a youth thing (Young Life) up at Lake Champion in NY back in 95. been trying to follow as best as possible last 22 years. done a lot of dumb things both before and after <insert word of choice for 'conversion'>. found current church Delaware Valley Christian Church (across the street from Penn State Brandywine in Media) through counselor i was seeing after first marriage failure back in 07. been attending there ever since, met wife there, all 3 kids so far and new one coming next month enjoy it there.
Not everything I think is something I should say.

Can we now classify the Catholic Church as a cult with a history and general practice of abusing children and get rid of it?

I hope this isn't a trigger for anybody...
