Biden in Plain Sight: Politics

I don't think they actually appoint anyone before the election.

Not sure we can trust any single Republican to stand down based on principle.

This is happening, and this year sucks. And we are moving towards autocracy at a rapid pace.

I don't think they do it before the election, but I do think there's gonna be a vote in lame-duck, and it's going to be disgracefully ugly.

Options for Mitch:

-Ram someone through now
-Wait until after election day so that people are motivated to vote (and you don't hurt R-Senators in battleground states) and then try to ram someone through if you lose the Presidency or Senate
-Actually wait until after the new Senate is in place in January

I'm expecting Option 1, but 2 wouldn't shock me. That last one would be a big surprise to me.

That I could see.

Yeah, this is probably the most likely outcome. The risk in waiting is lame duck senators not voting yes and those at risk in 2022 abstaining as well.

But fuck it, worst case this happens, it leads to a massive dem wave, 2 new SC justices, more federal judges and a map that positions us to add to the senate not lose seats in 2022.

Option 2 makes the most sense. Can’t lose on that one.

I assume someone will be nominated before the election in order to dangle a shiny new Supreme Court justice for GOP voters on the fence about Trump, but they won't hold the vote in order to draw in those voters while also not hanging the vote around the necks of the Senators in contested seats.

Then, if they lose, they'll hold the vote in the lame duck because fuck us, that's why.

Nominating someone like Barrett prior to the election could backfire big time, as well. Trump is in deep trouble with suburban women and he needs some of them back. All things considered I'd rather be in their shoes than ours but there is definitely some clenching on the R side right now.

This article came out one hour before her death..

https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/20 ... tion-that/

speculation that Biden may pick Mitt Romney as Secretary of State...

I don't think it's happening, but no way will Romney allow a vote before the election

Only leverage the Dems might have are the 9/30 government funding deadline and Covid relief bills and maybe if confirmation hearings take a lot of time that takes sitting Senators up for election off the campaign trail.

I mean I *think* I know this is me just being an overly paranoid drama queen, but honestly at this moment I feel that this has us actually at the brink of civil war. If there were a call for enlistments right now, I am kind of thinking I would have to die for what this country ought to be.

I like Andy Richter's tweet:

"If McConnell hypocritically rams thru a nominee before the election and Biden wins & Dems take Senate, increase the SCOTUS to 13. And make all 4 new justices progressive. Screw parity. Show the GOP the other side of the “fuck you and fuck fairness” game they’ve been playing"

Before the installation of a new Congress and government, not before the election.

Great and the episode of Voyager I have lined up is one of those ones that is pointlessly set up in the past probably on the holodeck.

I think Kelly would start right away if he beats McSally fwiw. Wouldn't have to wait until 2021 to take office.
