Statues of Limitations: Politics Thread

Mueller wrote an open in the Washington Post: “The special counsel’s office identified two principal operations directed at our election: hacking and dumping Clinton campaign emails, and an online social media campaign to disparage the Democratic candidate.

“We also identified numerous links between the Russian government and Trump campaign personnel – Stone among them. We did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired with the Russian government …

“The investigation did, however, establish that the Russian government perceived it would benefit from a Trump presidency and worked to secure that outcome. [And] that the campaign expected it would benefit electorally from information stolen and released through Russian efforts.”

It’s good that he has the resolve that his team did the right thing and did it with precision and accuracy, but these occasional bubbles defending the work are completely drowned out by continuous flow of tweets declaring it a hoax.

I can't see that happening this time now...Biden is different than Hillary..Biden's going to take Michigan and WI this time...probably PA too and maybe Florida...it's all over then. Arizona, NC, Georgia is just gravy...

Right. And these places have become MORE not less diverse since 2016. So, he would need MORE votes in these states in 2020 with equal turnout to win. And turnout will not be equal, it will be much, much higher with more Republicans choosing to sit out (out of disgust) than Dems (many who sat out in disgust over Hilary).

The wildcard is Biden’s health (trump can hide any serious ailments over next 3 months) and Russia/Turkey/Israel. If they all choose to sit out, it’s going to be more problematic for Trump.

He needs to be in front of a camera saying these things. Much like Fauci on COVID.

I think if the last 4 years are any indication, literally ANY of the following are possible:

1. Trump and his DOJ attempt to postpone the election because of COVID-19 or fraud allegations or whatever.
2. Trump refuses to recognize his loss because of "widespread fraud" and literally refuses to leave the office
3. Trump acknowledges that he lost but does serious damage to the country between November 4th and January 20th and does no transition assistance.
4. After losing the election, Trump resigns the Presidency at some time between November 4th - January 20th, Pence is sworn in with the sole purpose of issuing a Presidential Pardon to Trump and his family
5. The moment Biden is sworn in Trump is on a plane for places outside of the U.S. to avoid prosecution.

Agreed. This is the most critical presidential vote of the 9 held since I became eligible.

Multiple are even possible.

It's a real possibility that if Biden wins, Trump won't even attend the inauguration to see Biden sworn in...

When is the last time something like that has happened?

Attend the inauguration? I think it's more likely he holds a rally to announce his own news network at the same time as the inauguration.

The best transition, for America, would occur if Trump spent those two months in Florida golfing.

He also deliberately came to a shitty conclusion about Trump's team working with Russians. They most certainly did work with them. That's what the Trump Tower meeting was about. And his adherence to a stupid memo from 4+ decades ago is a joke. Given what he knew, the memo should have been challenged. He was tainted from the beginning. He's not as far gone as Barr, but he definitely had his thumb on the scale. He should have protected the american people, but instead he protected the FBI and Trump.

#3-5 are definitely possible but unless I’m mistaken, #1 would end in Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House assuming the presidency in January 2021 until an election is held since Trump/Pence’s terms would be over regardless of whether there’s an election or not. And #2 would result in him being literally dragged from office if need be by the Secret Service and/or the military.

I thought this might have an effect on his standing with military folks, but my brother in law is in the air force and he said the people who like him think it's a fake story.

I'd like to think dems know more about this than they're letting on and will hit him with it in late Sept-Oct. In the meantime, his lack of action speaks volumes.
