Everyday, our history is being re-written. Schools are changing their names, statues are being torn down, and the foundation of this country is under a microscope.

I wonder if educational textbooks are going to be updated to reflect this perspective. If the aim is to educate, no better place to start.

Some organization is necessary or the message is going to start to fall on deaf ears. Ulysses s Grant statute pulled down in San Francisco yesterday starts to pick at the edges of this problem. It is true the grant had a slave for approximately 1 year, the circumstance of how that person came into his existence is unclear as it's been both reported that he was gifted the slave and acquired the slave. It seems likely that this came from his wife's family who were slave owners. Regardless, Grant indeed was the general who won the civil war, and is very much on record as being anti-slave. He even went on to include blacks in government immediately after the civil war.

Random acts and shallow thoughts are the division that is craved by some.

History is not being re-written. Cultural values are being reset.

To where they should have been.

Germany has no statues, no schools, and no public parks named for figures of the Third Reich. And it is illegal to fly the Nazi flag.

It's bad but also very strange because he winds up posting a definition of the term that explains, in detail, why it is far worse than any other racial epithet, which definition provides examples of how it was used not only just to call somebody a name but to systematically exclude an entire race of people.

It's like his post devolved into proving why it is bad.

Not sure if this belongs here or the politics thread but a really good place to start for police reform in PA is reforming Act 111 which has given police unions the uneven and unprecedented power they have.

Effectively, when negotiating contracts with municipalities there is a 30 day window of time. If a deal is not reached it goes to binding arbitration. 3 arbitrators are chosen. One by each side and a neutral one. The neutral one is never neutral. The municipality also has to pay for two of the tree arbitrators. The police union in theory is supposed to pay for their handpicked one but that person is on their staff already so it costs them nothing. The negotiations are never public either.

Municipalities basically just give the police union whatever they want because it is likely the results in arbitration will be worse and as mentioned above, expensive.

It seems to have bipartisan support because Republicans will do anything to dismantle any type of organized union.

We need to move to extending the window of time for negotiations, cost share the cost of arbitration equally, expand the pool of picking the neutral arbitrator from 3 people to 7, and make the negotiation open to the public. There are some other nuanced things in there that are important to change too. But if Act 111 is reformed it will give municipalities an equal footing in these processes which have led to immense power for police.
