You had one or two players per team, with one cup per player. The cup was filled with one 12-oz (cheap) beer at the start of each game. If a cup was hit during play, and the team whose cup was hit could not return it, they would have to take a drink. If the ball landed in a cup, they would have to finish the beer.
The game that most know as "beer bong" we called Beirut.
Even at that time it seems Lafayette was an outlier.

You mean how they taste great but transform into a stimulant laxative?

It’s funny, Steve and I grew up on the same street, we did a bunch of kid stuff together, manhunt in the summer, built a luge track in the winter, played MtG after school and we both played trumpet in the band. He was a year older and we lost touch when he graduated. I wound up going to East Stroudsburg and one night a girl I was hooking up with’s roommate was trying to get with some dude at Lafayette and she had a car so I went with them. Long story short, I played some beer pong, made some friends, one of which asked if I wanted some herb. I said yes, and wound up in a room with a dude packing the bowl on a 6’ bong. That dude was Steve. I had to stand on a chair to clear that bad boy. I later pissed on the side of a Wawa in Easton that I would wind up frequenting some years later when I moved there.
RIP Steve.
