the convention wasn't until july, and she wasn't the presumptive nominee until 6/13, so i think comparisons of this point in time aren't really the same

Just looking at May polling from 2016 (quickly, and off of RCP) the results ranged from Clinton +13 to Trump +5. There were 7 polls showing Clinton in the lead and 5 with Trump winning. May - June seems to be Clinton's best span, but most/many polls had her winning. It is also worth remembering that these polls do naught for Electoral fortunes and it is only May.

JH can probably help with this some, but looking at recent general election polls, the variation seems to be mostly in Biden's support. Trump hasn't broken 46% at all this year, and recent polls have him getting 40-42%. (There's a Harvard Harris poll out there that seems to have pushed everyone to make a choice--it had Trump 46 and Biden 53.) I just can't imagine Trump getting over 45% in the general election--how many people who aren't supporting him now can be convinced to do so?

Water under the bridge now but this is why I floated the Biden/Beto ticket way back. Texans will vote for Texans and that ticket might have seriously put Texas in play.

With Trump as an incumbent a lot is baked in that wasn't before as far as popularity goes. He has a ceiling. It depends on the Democrat to clear that ceiling enough and in the correct way to win.

25% of the voting population voted for him. I'd be amazed if he got 25% again.
