I don’t think you understand national polling and how it includes opinions from many different places (psst the USA is big) with many different people with many different exposures to truth/fiction. How people interpret the question will differ. Many probably look at it internally - I’m ok, my fridge is packed, I’m not sick, same with my friends - he must be doing good.
Additionally, crises generally result in near term bumps to approval ratings.

I think this is the long and the short of it.
As cases skyrocket, deaths mount and people get fucking sick of being inside and realize their $1200 isn't going to pay the rent + bills + food + whatever, I think any gap between Trump's job approval and Trump's Coronavirus job approval will disappear or invert.
But in the short term he's definitely getting the benefit of the doubt. Most people don't follow news like people who post in this thread do. Normal people aren't on Twitter. The top watched cable news shows are viewed by less than 1% of Americans in a given night. If you're deeply interested in politics, you need to work hard to adjust your expectations for what poll results among normals show.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the administration’s most outspoken advocate of emergency virus measures, faces a torrent of false claims that he is mobilizing to undermine the president.

For example, YouTube psychos like Molyneux started describing homeless people in California in dehumanizing terms, then a little less than a year ago Tucker picked it up. Late last year Fox and Friends started running segments about it, and now Donald routinely talks about it. Not sure if this is organic or driven by behind the scenes people who move freely between these circles. If Fox and Friends or the prime time hosts start bashing Fauci, it’ll be interesting to see how long he lasts.

Trump has reversed course on making Vice President Mike Pence the public face of the response, instead taking center stage himself in daily press briefings, which have had the viewership of a major sporting event. He has branded the administration’s response as his own, not that of the public health experts, as with a direct mail piece sent out this week by the Centers for Disease Control promoting “President Trump’s Coronavirus Guidelines for America.
On Saturday, with most Americans confined at home, Trump traveled on Air Force One to Norfolk, Virginia for a photo opportunity and ceremony for a Navy hospital ship heading to New York.
