south Korea has managed things very well as a democracy. They tested the hell out of the population and encouraged behaviors that slow the spread of the disease. Their numbers have been in decline like China, but without the draconian measures.

Of course, SK ramped up their testing very early because they have a functioning govt

The reason the SK numbers are in decline, or so I've heard, is that as they perform more tests, they are finding more and more people who have been or were running around with the disease with mild symptoms or who were close to if not entirely asymptomatic. Each time they discover one of these, the overall death rate drops.

I dunno, this widespread panic and places shutting down seems out of all proportion to me.

Here's a short piece that might help accept social distancing.

My takeaway at this point is that many in the infectious disease community stress how much they don't know about this particular virus at this point. They do know it's been fatal to a large percentage of folks that it's been identified in at this point. The do know it appears to be fairly communicable. they do know something like this can potentially be very very bad.

So, at this point I'm OK with people practicing an abundance of caution. I hope it turns out to be proven overcautious*, and if it is, I won't be mad at anybody.

*that may end up be a self fulfilling un-prophecy of sorts, that the precautions keep this in check enough to prevent a catastrophe, which will make it look like they were being overcautious. Infectious disease is a funny game.

I talked my wife out of her 40th birthday thing in Philly this weekend, basically just dinner and bars with friends. My friends seem to think it's reasonable, hers think I'm crazy. She's a therapist, I asked her when the last time she had a 60+ client. She said she just had one that day. I said this is why we shouldnt' be doing unnecessary things like that, bc we carry it to others that can get sick, like her mom and step-mom with stage 4 cancer.

It's really weird everyone's attitude is "It's fine, it just kills old people". To me that means we should be careful so we don't get it to old people. It's the same as getting a flu shot you selfish fucks

Is 3.4% a large percentage? I guess it is all a matter of perspective.

Completely agree with that last part. Was at a Wawa this morning and the cashier is a senior citizen. She had plastic gloves on to accept people's money, and I thought a similar thing. Like it is our responsibility to make sure I am doing my best to make sure I can't get her sick. She has earned the right not to die by some shitty ass virus.

I have a concert at the Met on Saturday (sold out, GA) and I don't know what to do. Obviously the risk of any one event being an issue is low, but these are the kinds of things that should be limited to 'flatten the curve' [i am a public health expert now].

I think we need to accept the very strong probability that we all be exposed to COVID-19 and carry on living our lives.

That's not the point though. This can explain it better than I can.

Part of the problem and it is something we see with lots of issues is you have a large group of people that think this is nothing worse than the flu and another large group that think this is going to wipe out half of the Worlds population. Don't see a ton of middle ground.
