Completely agree with that last part. Was at a Wawa this morning and the cashier is a senior citizen. She had plastic gloves on to accept people's money, and I thought a similar thing. Like it is our responsibility to make sure I am doing my best to make sure I can't get her sick. She has earned the right not to die by some shitty ass virus.
I have a concert at the Met on Saturday (sold out, GA) and I don't know what to do. Obviously the risk of any one event being an issue is low, but these are the kinds of things that should be limited to 'flatten the curve' [i am a public health expert now].

I think we need to accept the very strong probability that we all be exposed to COVID-19 and carry on living our lives.
That's not the point though. This can explain it better than I can.

Exactly, this and Milty's article sum everything up. It's just very selfish to have this kind of attitude

You'd think the NYT could drop the paywall for coronavirus coverage. Guess not.

It looks like we will not be going to the state basketball final on Friday. Mrs. Vulture is making the call. She has asthma, so I think it makes sense not to go even though I have not heard anything specific about asthma being a risk factor. Of course, we are also both over 50.

I also counted our toilet paper stock--we are over 16 rolls.

I was a bit surprised this morning that my commute was as traffic-y as normal. I was kind of expecting Friday during the summer level with more people starting to work from home. Guess a lot of that will depend on the federal government, and our dumb president appears less inclined than most to acknowledge the potential severity of what's happening.

Going to a wedding in Tampa this weekend. Did not really give any thought to cancelling or that it might be cancelled. The bride to be sent a long email last night about how it's all still on, but there will be various hand sanitizing stations, and how the whole thing is outside so no enclosed spaces, and if you've been to Wuhan or Milan in the past few weeks, maybe don't come. Must be stressful for them.

COVID-19 has been around for many years, look at a Lysol bottle (older than 3 months ago, like years..) it says it kills the virus. Not a new virus, media is making it more than what it is.

The problem is that this has been politicized, largely by defenders of Trump, so what people believe depends not on their evaluation of evidence but on their political loyalties. The only way to defend Trump's idiocy and incompetence in dealing with a major public health threat is simply to deny it's a problem. Republicans have of course been doing this for awhile with other issues like climate change.

A competent Republican President would act differently, I'm sure, but there's also an underlying ideology--the denial that as a public we should do things (pay taxes, not be so selfish) for the sake of public goods.

No doubt. Indeed, liberals might be more panicky than Trump supporters, precisely because they don't trust the President, and in their panic might be more likely to stockpile hand sanitizer. But they also might be more likely to "socially isolate" even if their motivations are largely self interested, which actually should help.

There's also a problem where no one is getting trusted guidance from public health authorities. Some things seem obvious--cancelling or limiting attendance at sporting events like March Madness, for example, and making it easier for people who don't feel well to stay home from work or school. (Like not requiring documentation of illness for example.) But other things--closing schools briefly and doing "deep cleaning" seem pointless. And yes, lots of colleges are shutting down, and that probably makes sense at least from a CYA perspective. But does it really make sense from a public health perspective? (I honestly do not know--but presumably someone does.)

I think this is the big problem right now. Everyone is panicking because there hasn't been a good meme yet. We need a solid meme to get through this difficult time.

No, that wasn't my point. I'm saying many liberals are very casual about the whole thing bc only old people are dying and aren't seeing their responsibility to follow as many precautions as possible. I was using my wife's birthday as an example of this

My college is extending spring break for an extra week and then doing two weeks of virtual learning, but the higher ups expect we will end up doing that through graduation. No public events or visitors. Staff can work here or home.
