In my great-grandparents case it was a business decision. The old homestead was huge and they needed laborers.
Drunk and stupid is no way to be remembered but it is an easy way to forget.

My guess is that this is (sadly) likely just as common now, it's just easier to avoid/terminate pregnancies.

never heard much about that... but it was an arranged marriage, both born in germany/austria. he was 28 she was 13. had her first at 14 and last at 44. but wouldn't surprise me.
