Random Slowhands and other Wheels Falling Off

Microsoft's Slack knockoff/killer Teams app had a Super Bowl ad (note: works well for us), today it was down for several hours (reality check: screwed us for a few international team meetings). Good job Microsoft.

An "artist" in Berlin drags a wagon with 99 smart phone in it to create google traffic jams. There are pictures of him towing the little wagon down an empty street.

Some guy would go out an 'pump the breaks' in Portland's Terwilliger Curves about a decade ago which resulted in caterpillar delays. The curves are an accident magnet. I remember the news story, and am sure that guy had to go into hiding.

People are so impatient. I know because two days ago I was wondering what the hell happened to the HoF and yeah, realized nothing came out until the 7th.

More evidence that the virus is much worse than being reported and why it got so bad so fast...

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/02/03/asia ... index.html

On January 10, after unwittingly treating a patient with the Wuhan coronavirus, Li started coughing and developed a fever the next day. He was hospitalized on January 12. In the following days, Li's condition deteriorated so badly that he was admitted to the intensive care unit, and given oxygen support.

On February 1, he tested positive for coronavirus.

This doctor said there was a problem very early and he was reprimanded by the police. He later treated a patient with the disease and got sick a day or two later. He's been in intensive care with a pneumonia condition in the middle of an epidemic since the 14th of January, but he wasn't verified with the virus until Feb 1st. That's over 2 weeks before he was diagnosed even though he had obvious symptoms.

There was a nearly 20% jump in cases and in deaths yesterday. It's now over 20k cases and over 400 dead. This is going to blow past all the other coronaviruses combined. There are over 180,000 chinese tourists in Thailand, a good chunk of them from Wuhan. If you figure 1 week to spread the illness, and another week or so for people to get sick and maybe another week before people go to the doctor, I suspect we'll get big numbers out of thailand in the near future. Adding to that is the fact that China increasingly controls many of the countries in SE Asia and they won't speak out against China easily.

The person who does our childcare and cleaning went home for the holidays and is now stuck there. They literally bulldozed the roads closed. Food prices are going up fast and things are starting to disappear off the shelves. Things are still coming in, but not enough to keep up with demand. A friend of a friend said there are large quarantine facilities being constructed. There were pictures posted, but the pics were removed. I think it's going to get ugly. We fly back to the US tomorrow.

To the chinese credit in Thailand, almost every chinese person I see has a mask on. Hard to know if that's self preservation or altruism, but either way, it's a good thing.

just went to the wrong address for a fire alarm

how embarrassing

that's what i get for trusting technology

the dispatch app geocodes the address and passes the coordinates to google maps

google maps then reverse geocodes the coordinates to get an address

spoiler alert: the address it comes up with may not be the same as the original

To the discredit of people in the US, masks are sold out all over the DC area for no good reason. I assume hording. I also assume that these same people have not gotten a flu shot.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 15 million flu cases nationwide for the 2019-2020 flu season, resulting in 140,000 hospitalizations and 8,200 deaths in the U.S.

So far.

I mean, China wasn't building a hospital in 10 days if the numbers were what was being reported.

If those hospitals don't fall down in a spring rain that is a hell of a feat.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/04/us/twinsburg-55000-mail-post-office-trnd/index.html

(CNN)A man from Twinsburg, Ohio, was expecting to receive a letter in the mail.

Instead, when Dan Cain went to the Twinsburg Post Office to find 79 bins of mail, each containing roughly 700 copies of the same letter addressed to him, he knew something was very wrong.

Cain had to pick up the bins up from the back doors of the post office. It took him two trips to bring home the useless pile of letters, which he believes cost the company thousands of dollars to send, he said. If the company used a bulk rate discount of between 18 and 20 cents a letter, it would have cost up to $11,000 to mail the 55,000 statements.
These guys need a little bit more lead in their diet.
