Yeah, I was always under the impression that blackface hasn't been "acceptable" since like the 1940s.

When you add the KKK layer, though, that's when it goes from "insensitive" to "evil, racist, fuckwad".

So, to reiterate: Fuck this guy.

Yeah, the blackface by itself would've been pretty bad. It's the blackface with the KKK, and the idea that he thought this would be a good picture for his Med School (not HS or college) yearbook spread that makes it reasonable to call for his resignation.

You grew up in a different world than I did. There's plenty more examples, but here's a Monty Python Fire Brigade sketch that raised no fuss (see 3:05 mark). Or Gene wilder in silver Streak (see below) And it was a pretty common thing in sitcoms and variety show in the sixties and seventies. Minstrel show weren't seen largely because they'd gone out of fashion, not due to some cultural sensitivity. Privately, of course, people would put on shows in blackface or wear costumes relatively frequently. No meaning to offend, mind you: as long as it was "just us" aroound it was considered okay. I mean , I don't want to give the impression everyone did. I certainly wouldn't have. But it was hardly hidden, and certainly not illegal.

OTOH, posing as a black caricature with a guy in a KKK robe would have set off alarm bells at any age. It's not like he thought it would be funny to go as Sammy Davis Jr.

We must give the white guy who can't remember how many times he did blackface and whether it was with or without someone in a KKK outfit when he was 25 the benefit of the doubt. We must!

Whether he's in it or not the picture is without context. Far too many speculative conclusions of the intent have been drawn.

Regardless of what yearbook it is I doubt it was published without editorial review or faculty supervision. If it was so egregious for the time and place how did it get past those?

In the end what should have mattered is his record not a 35 year old picture of a college kid.

"College kid"

He was a motherfucking adult, but the mental gymnastics have been fun.

Yeah the stories connected to it are almost laughable. I mean Huckleberry said something like this is what makes him the most productive and creative president ever. I mean it's just ridiculous.

That link has lots of ugly. Pelosi can force senate to go on the record for something 2/3 of the country knows is a sham. Trump can veto the rebuke forcing an override. Trump love his acting Cabinet members because they are beholden to him, not the requirements of a confirmed office holder. Ugh.

If you wondered what the next move in the Disrupt Virginia campaign is from Big League Politics, it is publishing a claim that 15 years ago the Lt. Gov. sexually assaulted a woman during the DNC convention. BTW, a very thin reading sounds like a mirror of the Kavanagh scenario (thought this was gdne, guy wins an election, now up for a big promotion).

Since Northam appears to be digging in this is just an exercise in what would happen if... I am not sure the line of successions but I have to assume that BLP has some dirt on everyone until they get down to someone they approve of.

To be fair, the woman went to WaPo when Fairfax was elected and while they did not find any corroborating evidence, they did not find any reason to not believe her. They chose not to run with it because she did not tell anyone at the time of the assault. WaPo even quoted a mutual friend saying basically it doesn't sound like something he'd do but it also is not something she'd lie about.

“Does anybody think it’s any coincidence that on the eve of potentially my being elevated that that’s when this uncorroborated smear comes out?” Mr. Fairfax told reporters surrounding him in the rotunda of the state Capitol about whether he believes Mr. Northam, a fellow Democrat, was behind the accusation’s coming to light.

He later walked back his suggestion, saying he had “no indication” that Mr. Northam was responsible.

The Virginia AG is having a very good past 72 hours.

Last name Fairfax.

Could the lt gov be a descendant of the slaves of the prominent Fairfax family?

Indeed when he took his oath of office he kept a copy of the letter that emancipated his family from slavery. The signature was one of the members of Lord Fairfax his family.
