I have to believe that when a successor is nominated, this statement will be ancient history.

The GOP will only turn on Trump if his approval rating drops precipitously, correct?

What are the odds of that happening?

I mean, we are now in a bear market and MAGAs loved themselves some Mad Dog.

@marcorubio
Gen.Mattis has served our nation with great distinction. He will not be easy to replace.
For the sake of our national security I hope his decision to resign was motivated solely by a desire to enjoy a well deserved retirement.

---

Yep, you nailed. The letter cleary states he just wants to spend more time with his family out of nowhere.

I mean he posted that 5 hours ago, and within a few minutes of it posted follow up tweets with the letter saying "Just read Gen. Mattis resignation letter. It makes it abundantly clear that we are headed towards a series of grave policy errors which will endanger our nation, damage our alliances & empower our adversaries. 1/2. I hope we who have supported this administrations initiatives over the last two years can persuade the President to choose a different direction. But we must also fulfill our constitutional duty to conduct oversight over the policies of the executive branch. 2/2"

But you nailed it!

He followed it up with this gem too:

Bill passed in House tonight reasonable.

It has $ for 2 important priorities: border security & disaster relief.

No legitimate reason for Dems to shut down government over this.
They voted for $800 billion for Obama stimulus but won’t vote for $5 billion to secure our border?

He's a coward.

People are avgering $60.40/donation to get that wall built. 8.7M pledged. I did deduct the $50k outlier donation. Over 143k Americans on this deal. Going to need over 82M Americans to participate to getter done at this pace.

Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride with, I suspect, a crash landing.

Well I agree with most of this. I don’t actually think he understands the challenge and likely impossibility of building his wall.

Mattis should be called to testify about sending troops to border.

The Democrats are trying to belittle the concept of a Wall, calling it old fashioned. The fact is there is nothing else’s that will work, and that has been true for thousands of years. It’s like the wheel, there is nothing better. I know tech better than anyone, & technology.....

Again, Trump has made a career of bluffing people into making better deals.

Here’s what will happen:

1 - trump shuts down government and blames entirely on dems

2 - trump passes bill from yesterday and takes credit for keeping government open as the messiah blaming any forthcoming crime by a non white person on democrats

Even odds

Not even close to even odds. He'll cave. He has already gotten what he wants out of this, another opportunity to vilify brown people and Democrats.
