Nothing is taken personally, and I'm aware the two currently leading the "to be Jewish one must equal an active and devout follower of Judaism" perspective are two of the more extreme of the overwhelming lefty majority in the BSG politics threads (not necessarily extreme in thought, but extreme in manner of communicating those thoughts).

Rather ironic Monkeyboy, that your blistering attack on people of faith equating people of violence a few days ago is followed by (albeit couched as a sarcastic dig) positioning yourself as a defender of a faith-based people. The Jewish past is rather violent, certainly, both as the invading aggressor and as the victim of an abhorrent attempt at annihilation. I'm now intrigued to know your overall thoughts on them as a people group, and US policy toward Israel at large.

I would love to hear what you think would be the "historic accepted definition(s) of who is a Jew" that isn't "one who follows the tenets of Judaism" (or something similar).

This is probably straying a bit from the political theme of the thread, so suffice it to say that with a minimal amount of looking around I think you'll find a strong lineage component that includes deviation from a Judaistic belief system. To disclaim, by no means am I suggesting something other than the strong majority of self-identifying Jews would remain true to at least the basic tenants of Judaism.

I know lots of people who consider themselves "secular" or "non-observant" Jews. In many respects, they're much like people who put up a tree and sing Silent Night but never go to church.

I agree that there can be a strong lineage component to being Jewish and that many Jews are non-observant religiously. However, the lineage component stems from a religious belief and still don't think that it is the "historic and accepted definition of who is a Jew".

The reason he didn't see the protest was because the motorcade changed course to go around it not because they were staged far away.

Disclaimers: one person's opinion, I'm totally cherry-picking and I have no doubt you meant the following in jest. But I do consider the following an extreme style of making a point.

Phred wrote:I hope she (Tomi, not Michelle) gets sexually assaulted at gunpoint by a white guy and nobody believes her when she tries to report it.

I'd actually be pretty surprised, given her looks and the crowd that she hangs out with, if she hasn't already been assaulted multiple times in her life.

So-called Birthright Citizenship, which costs our Country billions of dollars and is very unfair to our citizens, will be ended one way or the other. It is not covered by the 14th Amendment because of the words “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” Many legal scholars agree.....

I'm on regular record here as being pretty anti-Israel in terms of their policies towards the US and Palestine. I also recognize and have said I don't like US policy in Israel or Palestine policy towards Israel. I think it's a bunch of bad actors acting badly, so I don't really take sides. But I separate the Jewish faith from Israel, which might be a little weird, but I don't believe the average Jewish person likes much of Israeli policy. Maybe that's wrong, but the jewish people I know are rather embarrassed by Israel's actions on a regular basis.

I made a more blanket statement the other day than intended and you are right to call me out on it. I didn't intend to make it sound like all people of faith are a problem, but I do believe that the evangelicals supporting Trump are maybe the most hypocritical group I have seen in my lifetime. They are absolutely blind to all his faults, particularly the ones that go against biblical teachings, yet they somehow manage to still feel righteous enough to call out the transgressions of others, real or imagined. They seem to be acting solely on faith, and by that I meant they do not see evidence that contradicts their views and they don't need any evidence at all. They believe Trump is worthy of leadership to a cult-like level and no amount of contrary evidence will make them change their minds. I find it maddening. I mean, the bible teaches pretty clearly, as its central tenets, to be kind to the poor and strangers and to abhor violence, etc, etc. Trump and his policies are the opposite of those things, but somehow evangelicals have twisted their beliefs to match his. If it's not faith in him that's doing it, what is it? The evidence of who he is and what he stand for is plain as day. How do they still believe in him and that his stands are righteous? If not faith, what is it? They have embraced faith in their lives in other ways, so for them maybe it's not so much of a stretch to believe in something/someone without evidence. It's a question for someone more versed than me in the psychology of groups and that group in particular.

Seems like it would be a tad late to get out mailers to combat it. What could be done to message against them beyond door to door?

Talked to another pal who considers himself a conservative. He and his wife can't being themselves to vote for anyone that associates with Trump. They'll be voting for Leslie Cockburn in VA 5 which is a true toss up. She's Olivia Wilde's mom too! Pretty cool.

Fair point.

The first sentence, I did make in jest although in retrospect it was in very poor taste even for me.

The 2nd sentence, I actually did wonder. Maybe not multiple times but given the proliferation of sexual assault, her objective hotness and the crowd she hangs out with, I would be surprised if she hasn't encountered some kind of sexual harassment at some point in her life.

can't blame the reroute for him not knowing. Fox News was all over spraying Pittsburgh as a bad, bad place for disrespecting the President. FNC actually cover the protest, and we know Donald tunes in.

Did anybody tune into the Beto townhall with Chris Matthews last night? If the election was purely about "likability", he would win in a landslide. I thought he came across really well, answered the questions asked, sounded informed and avoided any bait from Matthews regarding Trump's and Cruz's schoolyard comments about him.
