What is their rationale for calling themselves Messianic Jews instead of Christians?

That Jews are waiting for their Messiah and they found him and it's Jesus

Are you talking about Judaism or the historic accepted definition(s) of who is a Jew? These are not the same. I think you're choosing an incredibly narrow and not at all widely accepted definition.

Granted, I agree with the idiocy of the choice in the context of the earlier discussion.
