From Summit to Plummet - Politics Thread

It's the death of the old GOP. This is the GOP now.

I used to think that Trump was a phenenomon that couldn't be replicated but there are hundreds or thousands of mini-Trumps out there willing to take up the banner of xenophobia and authoritarianism. And a large swath of America will be there waiting for him (obviously it will be a him).

One day demographics will win out but structural advantages built into the electoral college for Republicans and House will make it a much longer timeline than I thought. Depressing.

Well Trump also had a cult of celebrity, and reputation as a genius businessman, and a terrible opponent, and still just barely won.

Pretty sure we're heading towards a pretty crazy day with Cohen and Manafort news, right? I mean a lot could just break open today if it all just so works out that way

Me too

I honestly didn't understand how the GOP held together a coalition of gun, tax, and abortion zealots. The addition of abject racism (with what doesn't seem much of a decrease across those other factions) makes it more formidable at the moment.

But with a candidate with less star power next time, I could see the actual issues mattering.

No real denying it anymore.

It is going to be absolutely incredible when this eventually blows up in their faces. Trump will ultimately be the death of the GOP.

Ive been hearing about the death of the GOP for 3 years now, when is it going to finally croak?

It's stronger than ever. The Republic is dead.

unfortunately he's still the candidate next time and right now is probably the favorite given the incumbency advantage.

I think the shine will be off the genius businessman thing by then though, and that there will be way more real enthusiasm on the left

i suppose if we win the house and the mueller report is as damning as i hope it is then it's possible he's not the candidate. i think it would take possibly literal murder for republican senators to vote guilty on impeachment though.

When the John Judis/Ruy Teixiara book The Emerging Democratic Majority came out.

To a large extent, the Republican party depends massive amounts of cash from Superpacs, Russian trolls, and voter suppression to stay viable.

Why don’t we see 24/7 coverage of a criminal lawsuitt against Trump, his kids and his nonprofit for fraudulent activities? Why isn’t that being tied to his still unreleased tax forms where he cannot substantiate any charitable contribution history (or the whereabouts of his revenues)?

Stop looking at shiny objects and wake up. This is significant news. If you and yours operate a NON PROFIT ILLEGALLY - might suggest you are willing to do other things illegally too.

The media is horrendous. Absolutely horrendous. Play the long game FFS.
On a scale of 1 to Chris Brown, how pissed is he?

This would be the case in any other administration. Hell, Scott Pruitt's shenanigans would be a huge scandal in any other administration. There is too much going on to be able to follow everything so they just jump around to each and end up doing nothing.

I'd rather see the media make explicit the connection between Trump's fawning over Kim Jung Un and crimes against humanity being committed at the US border, and add in the fact that elected Republicans are ok with all of this.

I think you could convince me that trump tells his buddies to short the indices right before he announces new tariffs

I think this is 100% correct. There literally are not enough hours in the day to give proper coverage to the never-ended list of shit this Administration is getting away with. And every day brings new shit to talk about. Sometimes the new shit is hourly. The Pruitt stuff is especially aggravating because it is blatant and provable and yet nothing has been done about it.
