Democrats had almost no leverage & an incoherent set of messages. That wasn't going to improve with time.

pretty simple messages: get it done. stop waiting on CHIP and DACA/Dreamer. Republcans created these messes, we need to fix it NOW, not three weeks from now.

it's not my fault they're bad at this.

so, three weeks is up and we are at it again, except with the debt ceiling in play. Rs will simply us this as a cudgel.

it's just too predictable. hypocrisy doesn't matter, so they'll say the Ds don't want to pay the nation's bills and are willing to shut down the government over ILLEGALS. Then we're right back where we were except this time it's already been shown Ds will cave.

Filibustering CHIP reauthorization/funding to say stop waiting on CHIP is one of those places where the messaging veers into incoherence.

the Rs created the issue by inserting anti-trans crap and eliminating pay-fors from ACA and not seriously working on it for 4 months. why not a CLEAN CHIP bill?

their leader created the DACA issue. why not a CLEAN Dreamer bill, which supposedly was what Trump wanted when he rescinded DACA protections.

If you're watching the evening news and one side is saying "let's pass government funding & extend CHIP for 6 years" and the other side is saying "you created this mess, we're going to block government funding & CHIP extension. let's pass a clean CHIP bill!" who is going to win?

polls have been showing the latter group is the one that is winning the argument. until they just shriveled up for no reason.

pretty wild.

will see what comes of it. they have to redraw quickly. republicans will probably just lose one seat based on that alone. then the philly suburb ones will become even easier to flip i would imagine.

I'm trying to find the opinion, but IIRC the appeal was solely a state issue and not some grand violation of the US Constitution like other gerrymandering cases - that means a SCOTUS appeal is unlikely.

Right, it was a State Constitution question, not a US Constitution. I don't know if an appeal would even be heard in the Supreme Court.

The deadline to submit the maps to Gov. Wolf is Feb 9th, and to the Court by Feb 15th.

Fifth, the Executive Branch Respondents are advised to anticipate that a
congressional districting plan will be available by February 19, 2018, and are directed
to take all measures, including adjusting the election calendar if necessary, to ensure
that the May 15, 2018 primary election takes place as scheduled under that remedial
districting plan.

More learned experts on Twitter are saying that there is no route to SCOTUS since it was determined under the PA State Constitution. I will defer to their wisdom, that was my initial belief, but I did not want to speak in absolutes.

I would assume our district is mostly fine since it's all Bucks County and some of Montgomery. Also, we will be getting rid of Fitzpatrick in 2018 I hope.

What craziness gets reshaped? Troubled Pat Meehan's PA-7, the northern salute to Maryland; 7's quirky sister PA-16 spanning a bunch of unrelated interests, and PA-6 representing the rest of that threesome? Its hard for me to judge, but 18, 15 and 12 are quirky (12 smells like a set up especially). The rest look like low population coal country amalgamations. I am sure there are some border disputes where there are some populations being pushed out of, or into another that are only recognizable with more local knowledge (Virginia has some of that in a state that is pretty blocky as far as districts).

Now this is a crazy story. ICE detains "Polish" doctor and green-card holder in Michigan who has lived in the U.S. for nearly 40 years. His family, also physicians, brought him here when he was 5. He holds a green card, but when he was a teenager he was charged with 2 separate acts of moral turpitude. January 1992, he was convicted of malicious destruction of property under $100, then in April of receiving and concealing stolen property over $100 and a financial transaction device. 2 strikes and you are out apparently (imagine if you found a way to avoid the draft repeatedly).

Admittedly, we cannot let these 26 year old crimes go unpunished! I wish Dr. Lukasz Niec the best of luck learning Polish.
