Today would be the day for something bi-partisan to be sent up approval, then man behind the curtain scuttles it based on his values and Trump doesn’t sign it, then all hell should break loose. There should be increasing awareness that “the general” is running the show. I really don’t have anything against Mattis, aside from the idea but I prefer civilian to be in charge of the Armed Forces, but I think my concern has become around Kelly because he does not know what he is doing except running a hardcore, myopic, fringe doctrine. Where is he getting his playbook?

FAKE NEWS (picture) / REAL NEW (message)

Thank you for calling the White House. Unfortunately, we cannot answer your call today, because Congressional Democrats are holding government funding, including funding for our troops and other national security priorities, hostage to an unrelated immigration debate. Due to this obstruction, the government is shut down. In the meantime, you can leave a comment for the president at http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact. We look forward to taking your calls as soon as the government reopens.

Nothing unethical at all about using the White House phone number to campaign for Republican candidates in 2018 and Trump in 2020.

Davos starts tomorrow. Does Trump leave the nation he represents closed to go? When he gets there, does he get the cold shoulder from the rich & famous? other allies?

I'd love Obama to go and be featured at an event.

DJT addressing the right to life march:

The president raised some eyebrows, however, when he proclaimed that “Right now, a number of state laws allow a baby to be born from his or her mother’s womb in the ninth month. It is wrong. It has to change!

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — Former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has met with Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi to discuss the potential return of Rohingya Muslim refugees who fled from Myanmar after being attacked by the military and Buddhist mobs.

Richardson has said he also plans to push for the release of two Myanmar journalists who had been covering the military violence against the Rohingya.

It was not immediately clear what, if anything, was decided in the meeting Monday in Myanmar's capital, Naypyidaw. The Rohingya exodus, along with widespread killings and rapes reported by the refugees, have drawn global attention and brought criticism of Suu Kyi, a former Nobel Peace Prize laureate once seen as a champion of human rights.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland's right-wing government faced pressure on Monday to act forcefully against far-right extremists following an expose of Polish neo-Nazis who celebrated Adolf Hitler, burning a swastika and dressing in Nazi German uniforms.

Private news channel TVN24 broadcast hidden-camera footage Saturday of neo-Nazis celebrating what would have been Hitler's 128th birthday in a wooded area in southwestern Poland last spring. The participants chanted "Sieg Heil" and praised Hitler as they burned a large swastika, some of them dressed in the uniforms of Nazi soldiers.

The report revealed that the same neo-Nazi group, "Pride and Modernity," was behind a November protest where pictures of centrist European Parliament lawmakers from Poland were hung on mock gallows in the city of Katowice. The far-right participants at that protest called the lawmakers traitors to Poland for having voted against the Polish government in a resolution in the European Parliament over alleged rule of law violations and the government's response to an Independence Day march organized by far-right nationalists.

The weekend TVN24 report has provoked widespread revulsion in Poland, which was occupied by Germany during World War II and subjected to widespread destruction and mass killings. Poles and other Slavs were considered subhuman in Hitler's ideology, and scenes of young Poles praising the man who unleashed such atrocities on the country are hard for many in Poland to fathom.

On Sunday, Poland's chief prosecutor launched an investigation into whether the crime of propagating fascism had been committed, which can carry a prison sentence of up to two years. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also said propagating fascism tramples "the memory of our ancestors and their heroic fight for a Poland that is just and free from hatred."

Grzegorz Schetyna, leader of Civic Platform, the largest opposition party in parliament, called Monday for the neo-Nazi group to be criminalized. He also accused the ruling right-wing Law and Justice party of having allowed extremism to grow during its more than two years in power. In one example, he faulted the government for abolishing a special government office aimed at fighting discrimination and racism soon after it took power in late 2015.

Would someone please demand an effort to account for, and disclose how much it costs to run up to shut downs. It is not trivial. There are a few costs that are not understood: 1) Work that goes into shutdown documentation, 2) efforts to orderly close down/out for a shut down, 3) work deferred because of the shutdown efforts, and 4) restart, which is not, again, trivial.

For Government personnel will be made whole, including our military (next military payday is Feb 1). Most contractors are in a lurch.

Not feeling good about the shutdown, might end today with no answer on DACA. Schumer is talking on the floor now.

Vote today, if no commitment on DACA by February 8th than Senate will proceed immediately to floor consideration. I don't know if that guarantees a vote or if it's fluff.

This vote just seems like an empty promise. McConnell has already broken promises to his caucus members (ACA protections to Collins, DACA vote in January to Flake), why trust him to not break a promise to his opponents?

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) tore into President Trump on the Senate floor Saturday, calling him a “five-deferment draft dodger” and slamming him for his comments toward North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Does he even know that there are service members who are in harm’s way right now, watching him, looking for their commander in chief to show leadership, rather than [trying] to deflect blame?” Duckworth said. “Or that his own Pentagon says that the short-term funding plans he seems intent on pushing is actually harmful to not just the military, but to our national security?”

“I spent my entire adult life looking out for the well-being, the training, the equipping of the troops for whom I was responsible,” she continued. “Sadly, this is something that the current occupant of the Oval Office does not seem to care to do — and I will not be lectured about what our military needs by a five-deferment draft dodger. And I have a message for cadet bone spurs: If you cared about our military, you'd stop baiting Kim Jong Un into a war that could put 85,000 American troops, and millions of innocent civilians, in danger."

Don't hold back, Senator.

I guess the CR would extend funding over the government until after the promise to discuss DACA, so if we face another shutdown CHIP will have been passed and cannot be used as a chip (intended) or held hostage. The next shutdown will happen because McConnel broke his promise and would all be on him.

Love Tammy Duckworth. She has a gift of clear thought connected to an ability to articulate said clear thought in a logical way.

Had to say 'good job' to Chuck, or even thank you from a Republican. Speech summary & getting to yes: You guys suck, can't get out of your own way, and would go down with the ship due to lack of leadership. Lets vote so we all can win for America!

Pessimistic outlook:

Senate passes a big bill that has defense, DACA, wall funding, etc. House rejects it. Budget deadline comes, Senate Dems are pressured to pass a budget w/out DACA because the House has already voted it down and shutting down the government again would be petty and pointless.
