even if trump makes a deal with schumer, how does that stop a shutdown? He can't make republicans vote for something they don't want and then they'd have to go back to the house to revote there, or am I missing something? I'm probably missing something because I'm damn tired.

If Trump says hey pass DACA they would probably quickly pass a 1 week CR and do the longterm dead next week.

I'm not sure the Dems should do that--that is, trust Trump to keep his word about signing onto DACA. Or anything.

And Schumer should say something like "Trump has a history of not keeping his word, both in his business career and politics. You'd have to be stupid to trust him to keep his word now, and we're not stupid. Unfortunately, since the Republicans have pandered to their racist base, DACA negotiations have dragged out to this point. Once the Senate and House have passed this, it will be up to the President if he wants to reopen the government or not. If you want a government that works better, that is focused on solving real problems people have, stop voting for Republicans."

Now, this depends on Schumer's confidence they can get something on the President's desk in the next few days.

If Trump says again that he'll pass a DACA/CHIP bill with long term spending then you'd have to do a super short term CR. Why shut down the government for a week when all you need to do is iron out the details of the bill to get it to the POTUS. If he doesn't sign the bill, then you shut down the government. This wouldn't be kicking down the can to ignore the problem for a month.

What value does a "deal" with Trump have? If you want a one week extension, Congress should pass that extension and continue working. Maybe Schumer going back to the Senate saying "Trump says he will sign this" could give him leverage in the final shape of the deal, but I think that's a mistake, because Trump could easily go back on his word, which has no value, and stab Schumer in the back.

But there's no way anyone, but especially the Democrats, can treat Trump as a good faith negotiator.

I do think Schumer saying "no deal, but progress" can be read as something like "I told the President what the Senate will pass and it will be up to Trump whether or not there's a deal."

Need Trump’s stank because McConnel has ceded all power of the Senate to the Executive. He says he doesn’t know what Trump wants in DACA deal so he doesn’t want to act on it.

Meant stamp but I’m keeping stank

A majority in both houses wanted to keep the government open. Alas, we gon shutdown.

Hope it at least lasts long enough for an easy Monday commute.

Guess you're on Trump's take.

For a guy who loves government, you don't seem to know how it works all that well.

A majority in both houses of Congress voted to keep the government open. Democrats are requiring a 60 vote threshold in the Senate and not providing the votes to keep government open.

You can think the Democrats are right in their policy objective of the DREAM Act (I do) and in their tactics of holding government funding hostage as a means of achieving it (meh, I think it will resolve itself before March either way), and still acknowledge the basic fact that Democrats are filibustering to shut down the government.

Several Republicans also voted no, but that doesn't fit your narrative. Trump runs your party. He has no clue how to do that. I think if you listened to Graham this week, you'd understand who is acting in bad faith here. I'm sure you have, yet you are placing the blame on the Democrats not the leader of your party that you, for whatever reason, still belong to.

Four GOPers voted no. Two agree with the Democrats on DACA - Graham and Flake - while two are not inclined to vote for unbalanced (i.e. pretty much all) budgets - Paul and Lee. Five Dems voted yes. 51 senators there were for ending the debate to proceed to a vote, but Schumer insisted on 60 so away we go.

The Democrats are filibustering to shut down the government. It might be the right action morally, politically, etc. But it's reality. Feel free to recognize it.

Dems did the right thing. GOP are incompetent. Why are we three months into the new fiscal year without a budget? That's Congress' biggest responsibility yet Republicans can't deliver.

CHIP and DACA need to be resolved as well, and not ignored like the GOP have done for months.

The American people know this.

No, it's the GOP's fault for chosing to use reconcilation on the tax bill rather than the budget.

No tax bill = no shutdown
