“One of the things that Michelle figured out, in some ways faster than I did — was part of your ability to lead the country doesn’t have to do with legislation, doesn’t have to do with regulations, it has to do with shaping attitudes, shaping culture, increasing awareness,” Obama said in a conversation recorded last fall but released on Friday as the first episode of David Letterman’s new Netflix show, “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.”

Letterman continued: “What is more damaging to that democracy? Would it be diminishment, by the head of the democracy, of [the] press” — prompting a smile and chuckle from Obama — “or would it be somebody screwing around with the actual voting process?"

Obama made a broader point.

“What the Russians exploited, but it was already here, is we are operating in completely different information universes. If you watch Fox News, you are living on a different planet than if you listen to NPR,” Obama said.

The interview took place onstage at the Amsterdam campus of City College in New York, which Obama pointed out was where he first tried community organizing, in a failed effort. Most of the conversation focused on memories of his time in office, and the occasional self-critical comment, with Obama remarking at one point, “When you become president and you’re in the Oval Office, you feel, ‘OK, now I have to act presidential.’ And we lost track of what had gotten us there, and that was our ability to tell stories and relate to people.”

The best part is once again nothing will happen...it’s amazing how spineless our politicians are. Trump will continue to act out with no fear of rebuke or consequence

Tom Cotton and David Perdue 'do not recall the Presidnet saying these comments specifically' and say Durbin isn't acting in good faith! It's Durbin's fault you're outraged!

Trump paid off an adult film star so she wouldn't talk about him cheating on Melania with her.

Look, time and time again, the mainstream media simply lets Trump off the hook. They went on and on and on about those damn e-mails. The reality of course was that the e-mails wasn't a thing, and Hilary wasn't corrupt, but it was like they couldn't point out one of the new revelations about Trump without blowing up a meaningless, old, and irrelevant story about Hilary because they had to try to appear "objective." Of course the typical voters thinks the e-mails were as a big a deal as all Trump's treasonous and corrupt actions combined--because that's how the mainstream media reported it.

Just today, the NY Times has an op-ed, the gist of which is "gee, maybe Trump is a little racist."

You know who else is racist? Anyone who voted for Trump. And it's time the media start saying that too.

That piece literally says 'and that makes him racist' as a declarative.

Would have been more helpful 2 years ago, but the media were too busy getting Trump the Republican nomination for President. He was good copy.

Trump getting elected resulted in more people paying attention and commenting/becoming involved in politics. This resulted in more people buying papers and watching news type shows. Twitter membership probably went up also. Trump getting elected made a lot of money for newspapers and news agencies. They have a vested interest in putting controversial people in office.

It pains me to say this, but in the Letterman show with Obama, Obama says that they put together the most effective use of digital media to move the needle on the election. Where that is true for the time, I think comrade president and his digital Russian cronies may have been more effective. I guess the only real qualifier would be that I sincerely doubt that Donald new of , or could comprehend the assistance he was getting.
