Let's check in on Kenya post-election:
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Kenya's attorney general warned Thursday that the opposition's move to "inaugurate" its leader Raila Odinga next week to protest the recent presidential election would amount to treason.

Attorney General Githu Muigai's comments came a day after the United States urged Odinga's supporters to call off the mock "swearing-in" on Dec. 12, the country's independence day.

The opposition objects to President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election after months of political turmoil that included a nullified August election and a repeat vote in October, saying that electoral reforms have not been made.

The attorney general warned that institutions created by Odinga's group such as "the People's Assembly" are unconstitutional and illegal and "may be visited by the full force of the law."

Odinga on Thursday rejected the U.S. advice to cancel next week's event, saying he doesn't recognize the legitimacy of Kenyatta as president.

Odinga also repeated his accusations against Kenya security forces, saying dozens of people have been killed in the months of election unrest and "nobody is talking about it. Yet they have the audacity to come and advise us to forget and move on."

bitcoin is going to end so well:

TOKYO (AP) — A bitcoin mining company in Slovenia has been hacked, for the possible theft of tens of millions of dollars, renewing questions about the security of the virtual currency just days before it is due to start trading on major U.S. exchanges.

NiceHash, a company that mines bitcoins on behalf of customers, said Thursday it is investigating a security breach and will stop operating for 24 hours while it verifies how many bitcoins were taken.

Research company Coindesk said that a wallet address referred to by NiceHash users indicates that about 4,700 bitcoins had been stolen. At Thursday's record price of about $14,000, that puts the value at almost $66 million.

the goal of the right-wing/third way to shrink the federal government has probably succeeded due to the 2008 recession. state government workforces have also been permanently affected (i see the results of this everyday).

success!

The Lt. gov, Tina Smith, is expected to replace Franken. She has indicated she doesn't want to run for Congress so it would be an open primary on the Dem side.

Weird choice if the hope is to keep the seat.

Maybe not. I don't know the electorate of Minnesota, but perhaps they wouldn't take kindly to a hand selected person running for the seat instead of through a primary and special election.

marriage equality has passed Australia's parliament fairly overwhelmingly
There were emotional scenes in Parliament House following the vote, as Labor senator Louise Pratt hugged her partner Bek and flagged their intention to marry. "It means the world to us," she said. "We've been working to this day for a really, really long time."

Veteran gay rights campaigner Rodney Croome dedicated the victory to those who had campaigned over many years, including those who had died before the law was changed. Their lobbying and activism had "built a mountain from which our legislators were able to see the truth," he said.

Alex Greenwich, the NSW parliamentarian who co-chaired the Equality Campaign, said: "We came, we saw, and love finally conquered. Marriage equality is finally the law of the land and we are so proud of Australia."

I love the conservatives (like Newt, for instance) coming to Franken's defense, calling out Democrats and saying Franken is the duly elected Senator and blah blah blah we're really just preemptively supporting Roy Moore being seated.

My favorite topic that might only effect me is tolling <formerly> public roads. The latest opened this week. Route 66 from the beltway to D.C. is 9 miles. The minimum toll is $8, but on its first day the algorithm made it $40! If you take a look at a map of the area, this is the only highway into the city at this part of the state. All roads need to cross a bridge, and there are few of those. 66 is literally the only direct route from North Fairfax county, Loudoun and points west (Manassas and the masses of people who live way-way out). The road previously was HOV, but now it is pay to play.

Anyone else seeing single, bottle neck highways becoming profit engines? Part of this is simply a shifting of taxation methods so that the status quo can be maintained, and in our very special scenario Northern Virginia is not permitted to have its own taxes to support infrastructure, so other parts of the state hold the line on strangling the North while profiting from our input to the state's tax benefiting them disproportionately. I am fine with supporting Appalachia, just let us self manage.

yeah. heading into DC they start around baltimore. the easy pass lanes/roads are priced according to the amount of traffic you'd be in otherwise.

ah did not realize those changed. i have seen them for 2 to 3 dollars. never anything more. but there you can just not go on the Ez pass lane. doesnt seem that is the case with 66 as indicated by thephan.

I think we can thank California for pioneering that. Traffic flow dictates cost. There are a few in the DC area, but I have seen it in SoCal years before. There is a toll lane in the VA portion of the beltway, and then down I95 from Alexandria/Springfield to like Woodbridge or Stafford. That southern leg hit +$60 once! Its a long way, or maybe it seem really long because of the traffic.

Just playing the game, you could do a Woodbridge around the beltway and down 66 to the Pentagon route on a bad day for $100.

There is an out. If you have 3 people in the car, and the right EZPass, it is free. That is not a change for the 66 leg that just opened as it was HOV-3 at rush hour. The way you work that on the Woodbridge to Pentagon route is a feature called a slug line where a drive picks up "slugs" to meet the HOV requirement. People line up and climb in a car when the driver calls out number and location. There are some good, and some very crazy stories about how this works, and the "rules". stories

it's really absurd they freaked out and fired the guy over using irony to show how stupid the Polanski defenders are. Cernovich is a terrible person.

the funny thing is this has elevated Seder a bit and he's gained a ton of new patreons and subscribers.

1a. He likes the picture on the cover, it looks like the picture on the wall of the office he visits in D.C.
1b. There is no way he read it
2. Not really, but the president can do whatever he wants, haven't you been following along?
