yeah. heading into DC they start around baltimore. the easy pass lanes/roads are priced according to the amount of traffic you'd be in otherwise.

ah did not realize those changed. i have seen them for 2 to 3 dollars. never anything more. but there you can just not go on the Ez pass lane. doesnt seem that is the case with 66 as indicated by thephan.

it's a very complicated long-term behavior change that is hurting people at the front-end but eventually should help most everyone. It sucks for those that are commuting solo and can't pair up, though. i'm wondering if buddy systems are being set up, etc. it seems simple enough with the internet; people have been doing carpools for years in the DC area.

I do see an issue where those who can barely afford it are now being dinged and cannot just 'change behavior' because they have their job and they have their place of residence and neither is easily shifted. these nudges tend to not factor in the short-term human toll (no pun intended) that their long-term goals seek to obtain. this creates a lot of consternation and anger and bad backlashes happen as a result.

President Obama speaks at forum:
Obama moved from that to talking about a nativist mistrust and unease that has swept around the world. He argued that such things as the speed of technical change and the uneven impact of globalization have come too quickly to be absorbed in many cultures, bringing strange new things and people to areas in which "people didn't (used to) challenge your assumptions." As a result, "nothing feels solid," he said. "Sadly, there's something in us that looks for simple answers when we're agitated."

Still, the U.S. has survived tough times before and will again, he noted, particularly mentioning the days of communist fighter Joseph McCarthy and former President Richard Nixon. But one reason the country survived is because it had a free press to ask questions, Obama added. Though he has problems with the media just like Trump has had, "what I understood was the principle that the free press was vital."

The danger is "grow(ing) complacent," Obama said. "We have to tend to this garden of democracy or else things could fall apart quickly."

That's what happened in Germany in the 1930s, which despite the democracy of the Weimar Republic and centuries of high-level cultural and scientific achievements, Adolph Hitler rose to dominate, Obama noted. "Sixty million people died. . . .So, you've got to pay attention. And vote."

Obama said his greatest "regret and disappointment" was the failure to enact tighter controls on gun possession. Though the issue resonates in far different ways with different parts of the population, "something is broke," Obama said, his own voice breaking, as he talked about 6-year-old girls shot to death at Sandy Hook, girls not too different in age from his own daughters.

On the beltway, 95 south, there are parallel non-toll lanes, and 66 outside the beltway has not gotten its High Occupancy Toll lanes set up yet. You opt in on 66 inside the beltway (during rush hours if less then 3 people in the car), then the extension to the airport (set cost), then the next extension to Leesburg (set cost with rungs for time of day) are toll lanes. So there are 3 separate transactions to go from Leesburg to Arlington at rush hour. You can take that route on route 7, but itis mostly a 2 lane secondary highway full of traffic lights, stores, and housing communities. Basically it is between very overwhelmed to impassable certain times of day. There is a way to take a super windy, really congested road parallel to the river, where the uber rich live, to get from Reston to the MD/DC/VA line, and then onto the equally jammed 2 lane GW or Clara Barton Parkways (each side of the Potomac). Basically the whole region is a case study in the failure of urban and infrastructure planning.

Look at the DC Metro and how it poorly server the suburbs (ill place stations, limited parking, short routes, and pretty expensive). Virginia especially is a small set of spoke, which are mostly secondnary highways through population zones augmented by 3 highways that get overwhelmed easily, and often, if not daily. Its very fragile. The commuter rail south down 95 sharing Amtrak seems to be an OK solution (no where near me, so it is observations). I took a bus 9 miles to work once and it took me 95 minute. Its just a pathetic to see how poorly this whole area was allowed to grow with very little though about what it actually means. Its just sad when it could have been though through. There are people who actually know how to do this, and could have easily been employed but that thinking likely came decades too late.

remember taking 66 on the way to West Virginia in august and was taken back by the seemingly forced toll on the road.

When I lived in NoVa and commuted into DC, my carpool would meet at a bus stop, then we would drive to the airport and take the express lane in every day to avoid the toll road. Of course, that lane would end at 66 inside the beltway which sounds like is now also a toll road (which sucks).

The traffic/crowded situation in that area was a major factor in why we left. Fuck that shit.

President Trump misquoted FDR saying that today is a "day that will live in infamy" when it is a "date which will live in infamy." I did an advance search of the word infamy and our own Bucky got the quote right but I have some bad news, Trump has been in our midst the whole time, and it's no surprise who it was:

"Elisha Harig-Blaine, an activist who leads the nonprofit National League of Cities, described this decision as “unconscionable.” Many of the veterans who depend on the program’s vouchers, she said, will “most likely” die on the streets."

Instant Karma to those who voted for this administration.
