Thank you for contacting me to share your support for the broadband provisions of Title II, commonly referred to as net neutrality.
Like you, I believe the internet has become a forum for innovation and creativity and should be protected. As you may know, net neutrality regulations were put in place in 2015 in order to classify internet providers as public utilities. This reclassification was an attempt to prevent internet service providers from "discriminating" against individuals or content companies by charging extra fees for guaranteeing priority on their broadband networks.
In effect, however, this may cause additional congestion and reduce the supply of bandwidth available to consumers, meaning higher costs and slower internet connections. Moreover, these rules have discouraged small businesses and entrepreneurs from investing in our telecommunications infrastructure.
As you are likely aware, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai has expressed support for eliminating net neutrality. To provide a public comment on this decision, I encourage you to visit FCC.gov. As it stands, the House of Representatives has not considered legislation addressing net neutrality. Rest assured I will remember your support should this the issue be considered as the 115th Congress moves forward.
Again, I appreciate your thoughts and it is an honor to serve you in Congress. Please do not hesitate to contact me again in the future.
Sincerely,
Lloyd Smucker
Member of Congress
Somehow I’m part of the 16th district while my neighbors are part of the 7th. How do they come up with these maps, literally makes no sense to me.
