FWIW - both my and my wife's family have stories about Native American blood. Neither of us ever believed it (nor did my parent in the "blood line"), so this was some sort of generational thing? The timing would say between 100 - 130 years ago.
Note: Sonny Skyhawk was interviewed and he had a notional figure of 1/3 of American feel that they have some Native American heritage. It was a simple statement, not a defense.

He is 63, and 62 is the minimum age for taking his Congressional pension. After 13 terms in Congress, it's probably a significant amount.
