Don't Go Flake-in My Heart - Politics Thread

From my understanding it is pretty impossible to unseat judges and if they're up for retention they always win. So whatever.

What does this mean for redrawing in 2020?

technically she was placed on the court by Wolf after a retirement so it was a direct race against Woodruff since she had to win outright at least once. He had a good chance.

Dems still have the Supreme Court so they'd pick the deciding person for the current system. I would it doesn't come to that and the lawsuit works out. I also hope SB 22 and HB 722 actually move, though I don't think that's likely. Take it completely out of the politicians' hands.

Enron Ed lost Loudoun county by 23,000 votes. ~116,000 votes cast. There are 375,629 residents from the 2015 counts, so if we assume that half are minors, you can use 200K voter, that is a crazy good turn out (lazy math would be close to 58%) for an off year governor/Lt. G/Attorney General/rep race with 2 bond ballot measures on the docket (public safety and school funding).

the most frustrating part of working ~18 hours yesterday was not having time to go and vote.

Chester County Dems did really well too.

I know that county has been moving blue over the past 15 years, but it is pretty cool to see all the hardwork payoff.

West Chester borough used to be all Rep. My dad put in a lot of work. Ran for council. Lost. Ran again. Won. He has since been term limited out, but he went door to door for years. I was there with him folding literature and stuffing mailboxes. Think one of the lessons in VA is just that. They had a huge door knocking effort. Have to keep people engaged even if they are longtime, reliable D voters.

Excited for 2018.

The two minority candidates targeted in the Make Edison Great Again mailer ("Deport!") were elected to the school board.

I saw that and wanted to put it out there. After reading up on Bob Marshall, and especially how Marshall treated her in general, that is an incredible amount of grace which is almost hard to comprehend.

Running against Trump will be a good tactic for the Dems in 2018, and in 2020. But they need to do more. They need to articulate a positive vision especially for non-college educated white voters. And that means listening to them as well, and encouraging more of these people to get involved in Democratic politics. Of course, you're not going to get all of them, or maybe even a majority of them. But especially among the younger ones, you can definitely make significant inroads with this population, because the fact is so many of the Republican policy goals objectively hurt this population.

In the meantime, particularly in the suburbs, you force all Republicans at all levels to acknowledge they're part of the Trump party now. If you're a Republican and identify as such, you're a Trumper. Don't let local candidates off the hook by saying "local issues". Dem candidates themselves of course shouldn't do this, but rather use surrogates. Have the candidates themselves articulate positions on local issues, and force the Rep. candidate to try to defend their broken party.

And, obviously, use the strategy of running everywhere for everything. Candidate recruitment is essential, even in areas considered unreachable.

Its proven that immigrants are good for the economy, so the results likely make Edison great again, just like immigration innovation made it great in the past.

How true. And it can't just be lip service or pandering. They've got to make the effort to come up with ideas to help those citizens and to be able to articulate clearly why the Republican agenda is not in their best interests.

A big CONGRATULATIONS to Pac's Mrs. and also to Moz. I wish them the best of luck in their new positions!

Quick Edit - I hope Phil Murphy governs better than he jumps. What a buffoon!

Was this Edison NJ? I mean, given its demographics, this seems like a pretty terrible strategy.

Especially since the Russians get to vote pretty much anytime they want.

I thought early voting was pretty common in blue states. We have it in Arkansas, and it does include a Saturday option. It's not ideal, since in order to vote early you have to go to the county courthouse. But in rural areas, that means about half the electorate lives withing a few minutes of the polling place. Outlying areas would normally be about 20-30 minutes away, though many people who live in outlying areas work in town.

If Trump stays in office long enough, every other elected official in the country will eventually be a democrat. Maybe we should just tell him he can be “president” for life, let him tweet all day, and send him to meet/embarrass himself in front of foreign dignitaries. Just need to find a way to strip him of the power to appoint people to offices and any control over the military.
