Wonder if Jeff Van Drew will finally run for that seat.

Not many GOP state legislators in the district, though probably a lot of countywide elected folks. I guess Chris Brown might run, especially if he wins today? A lot of counties in the district, Atlantic the largest at ~1/3 of it.

does the Dem have a chance?

Yeah. It'll be one of the top takeover targets nationwide. Though it was the biggest swing toward Trump in the state. Obama won the district by 8 in 2012. Trump won it by 4 last year.

Van Drew has represented a lot of the district forever, and it's the more GOP part of the district. I'd guess he'll be a favorite if he runs, though it would be funny if he got in and got primaried from the left and lost. He is very moderate.

I think there’s a good shot that district flips next year

I haven’t heard much chatter regarding the two ballot questions in NJ this year

Eh, it's been raining off and on around the Commonwealth all day. It's rained three times here today, just that I know of.

IDIOT ALERT

“Ralph Northam will allow crime to be rampant in Virginia,” Trump wrote on Twitter. If the Republican wins, Trump said, “MS-13 and crime will be gone.”

Hunter Patterson, also 29, was turned off by a negative ad, the Latino Victory Fund campaign’s spot against Gillespie.

“I wanted to send a clear message that not all Republicans” are racists, he said.

Michelle Villado, 44, a government contractor from Arlington, said she, too, felt compelled to vote against Northam because he “didn’t speak against” the Latino Victory Fund ad.

“I wasn’t going to come vote,” said Villado, a libertarian who did not vote in 2016, but “I felt the need to vote for the other guy.”

Villado is not Latino, but her ex-husband and his family are. The ad was “inflammatory, putting everyone . . . in this horrendous group who would unconscionably mow over children because of their race,” she said.

Robert Kinsler, 33, a business owner in Alexandria, was also incensed by the Latino Victory Fund ad.

“I thought the ad was very despicable and pushed me over the edge. It played to the common refrain from the left that the right is evil,” Kinsler said as he finished voting at Alexandria Fire Station #204. “It’s just very low.”

That Latino Victory ad did wonders.

Kinsler’s vote for Gillespie was driven in part by his opposition to sanctuary cities.

Barbara Cottman, 73, a retired nurse and Trump supporter, said the same.

“I believe in make America first,” said Cottman, who is African American and lives in Woodbridge. Sanctuary cities, she said, are “spitting in the president’s face.”

Virginia does not have any sanctuary cities

Those people weren't voting for Northam anyway.

This is why you run a campaign designed to get out voters willing to vote for you.

I've never been so uninformed in a voting booth before.

I saw the same candidates listed on both the Democratic and Republican side. The instructions were to pick 2:

Candidate A, Democrat
Candidate B, Democrat
Candidate A, Republican
Candidate C, Republican

Candidate A has a good chance!

My comment is really more about the idea that I don't think a lot of those people were going to vote at all. Now they're out there fill in the blank.

There is 15 minutes left until the polls close. Virginia closes stupid early. That's one of our many problems with our voting strategy down here. But I would say that the governor's race in a rather off year is probably always a challenge to get people to the polls. So I view 46% of registered voters as a solid turnout. It will grow a little bit, but not much.

Someone on MSNBC said earlier that if the black vote is at 18%, Northam would win.

It looks like it's 20%.
