So much love for the idea that if you put money aside for your retirement, rather then stand by and expect a government entitlement to cover you costs, would suddenly be open season for taxation to cover the tax plan. The grand plan is to penalize a plan designed to defer taxation until participants access the funds later in life is to undermine the premise by incurring up front taxation so that taxes can be lowered. In other words, its a shell game where taxes will be "lowered" by increase the basis for what citizens pay taxes on.

Truth be told, this might be a coastal bubble issue. I cannot get people I grew up with to put money into a 401K, and when I have they liquidated at job changes because it was their money so I just gave up. People living in my bubble can easily afford to contribute, and grasp the long term benefit. I never believed social security will be there when I get there, but then again I also did not think it would still be around now. These entitlement just never go away. :)

another one year borrowing and casino scheme is going to be passed:
Hundreds of pages of legislation — including a 470-page gambling bill first unveiled Wednesday evening — moved through the Legislature as top lawmakers bowed to concessions they had resisted since mid-summer.
The Senate voted 31-19 to approve its just-unveiled, far-reaching gambling expansion plan after months of talks as part of a wider budget agreement. Efforts to win its quick passage in the House ran late into Wednesday night, and debate was to continue Thursday morning.

Under it, Pennsylvania, already the nation's No. 2 commercial casino state, could see casino-style gambling in truck stops, airports, online portals and 10 brand new casino locations around the state, each with hundreds of slot machines and possibly table games.
It also would make Pennsylvania the first state to allow both casino and lottery games online, in a quest for money from new and younger players. Bars would be frozen out of the package, despite the House's long insistence that a gambling expansion should favor those businesses, rather than casino operators.

Earlier Wednesday, the Senate approved a House plan that revolves around borrowing $1.5 billion — with interest, payback likely would cost more than $2 billion over 20 years — and a grab bag of tax increases that is projected to yield as much as $140 million a year. For months, the Senate and Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf had sought a larger tax package and a lower borrowing limit, but ultimately found unyielding opposition from House Republicans.

Pennsylvania has had spending authority since the fiscal year began July 1 under a nearly $32 billion budget bill that lawmakers overwhelmingly approved. However, it had a gaping, $2.2 billion hole in it, largely from state government's biggest cash shortfall since the recession, and the ugly fight over how to fill it has pitted Wolf and the Republican-controlled Senate against the Republican-controlled House.
With perhaps a dozen budget-related bills passing the House and Senate this week, Wolf would not give his blessing to the package Wednesday. His office would only say that he would evaluate the bills.
"These bills contain many policy changes and deserve a full vetting," Wolf's office said.

With lawmakers itching to depart the Capitol until November, a debate over imposing a tax on Marcellus Shale natural gas production will wait indefinitely, amid opposition by Republican leaders there.

Pennsylvania is going for a hard fall simply because House Republicans refuse to raise taxes on natural gas and corporations.

This isn't going to end well and they'll blame Wolf in about 3 years when we go under.

today (ok, well yesterday) in 'fuck john kelly'
https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/10/25/u ... 6dYv?amp=1

John F. Kelly offered his opinion. If it were up to him, he said, the number [of refugees allowed] would be between zero and one.

Mr. Kelly gave an extended critique of Mexico, calling it a third-world country in danger of collapsing the way Venezuela has and arguing that the United States needed to guard itself against that, according to people informed about the conversation.

But, he said, it was authentic: “As somebody who worked with this guy, a lot of what he got up to say is a reflection of who John Kelly is.”

this isn't good:
Kenyan police say one man shot by police during violent protests against the repeat presidential election has died at a hospital.

The shooting occurred in the city of Kisumu, an opposition stronghold. Three other people were admitted to a hospital with gunshot wounds.

An Associated Press journalist in Kisumu saw ambulances transporting several people from the protests.

Kenya’s top police official says most of the country has been peaceful during Thursday’s repeat presidential election, although turnout is lower than in the Aug. 8 vote that the Supreme Court nullified over irregularities.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has voted in his hometown of Gatundu, saying that 90 percent of the country is calm and that he will work to unify the country if he is re-elected.

Kenyatta on Thursday said outside a polling station that Kenya must remove ethnic loyalties from its politics in order to succeed.

“What we have is a problem of tribalism, and tribalism is an issue that we must continue to deal with and fight with as we continue to develop our country,” Kenyatta said. “We cannot achieve our goals if we continue to embark on tribalistic politics.”

Many observers say Kenya’s ethnic-based politics overshadow the promise of its democracy. Kenyatta is from the Kikuyu group, while opposition leader Raila Odinga, who is boycotting Thursday’s election, is a Luo.

Julian Assange confirms Cambridge Analytica sought WikiLeaks' help

they are the data firm that worked for Trump's campaign

Another report by CNN, citing two unnamed sources, said Nix wrote to several people including Trump mega-donor Rebekah Mercer, explaining that he had emailed Assange seeking access to the Clinton emails to turn them into a searchable database for the campaign or a pro-Trump political action committee.

Mercer and her father Robert, a hedge fund billionaire, are major investors in Cambridge Analytica. Steve Bannon was a vice-president of the company – he reportedly had holdings valued at between $1m and $5m – before joining the Trump campaign and becoming the White House chief strategist, a post he left in August.

Cambridge Analytica’s website claims it holds up to 5,000 data points on more than 230 million American voters. It promises to help clients “gain the advantage over your opponents by adding our blend of big data analytics and behavioral psychology to your campaign arsenal.” It is believed to analyse social media, such as Facebook likes, to build a “psychographic” picture of target voters.

In August it was confirmed Flynn was being paid by Cambridge Analytica.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm not sure if you have known any male family members/friends/neighbors that aged and had problems with dementia/alzheimers, but other behavioral changes typically accompany the well-known symptoms of memory loss. It's very sad, and trying for those people who knew the man before those changes occurred. In particular, impulse control can degrade, along with the previous held restraints and perceptions of right/wrong behavior. Any public outing with strangers/acquaintances is a stressful outing that includes the potential for inappropriate touching. This is also part of why dementia patients are so difficult to manage in senior assisted living arrangements; it's not just the memory loss, but the lack of impulse control.

I'm not sure if that's happened with Bush, but I can certainly empathize with his family and handlers if this is what they are going through. If this is true, I believe strongly that these end of life changes should not affect a President's legacy, unless it's used constructively to open a dialogue about mental health and old age.

That seems hard to believe. I think it is tighter then reported, but not upside down with a possible 8 point margin. Perhaps it is that 27 point spread of "don't know" which is really more like 'tired of my phone ringing from 0730 - 2100 asking me my opinion.

I was surprised when I was hiking in the Shenandoah over the weekend at how many Northam signs I saw. I would not have expected to see anything but GOP stuff out in the blue ridge, but it was much more then 50% (I'd guess like 75% Northam).

Please read this before you freak out about that new poll in the Virginia governor’s race

The polling for VA has seemed to overrate the Democrat in the race the past few cycles. I'd lean Northam but Republicans know how to close ranks.
