I don't care what you say, filing a police report is the right thing to do!

Hire some local thugs to put a scare in the perps. What could possibly go wrong?

Bookstores seem to be responding to their competition, and at least as far as I can tell, the savings you might get from shopping around aren't as much as they used to be. That can vary--certain books, like books that are long out of date--can sometimes be found for extremely low prices. (I once assigned a book that could be found for 99 cents on a few sites.)

I'm a bit suspicious of pushing book rentals. Looking over the books I assign (and now the one Lil' Vulture needs) the savings seem minimal at best. In many cases, a student might be able to resell a book at the end of the semester and thus be able to get a book for very low or no cost. (Or even profit--the philosophy book I use and will continue to use is currently available used to buy for $5, though most copies cost more like $13. Renting is about $12 on Amazon. In many cases, a book might be a valuable reference for future classes. (For example, a stats book could be valuable in future social science classes.) In any event, the movement of so much of our economy to one where instead of buying things which we then subsequently own and can do with what we like to an economy based on access where we pay for the ability to access material which may or may not be there the next time we look is an underappreciated feature of our economy. (Think Netflix and The Office.)

As far as college course books go, it would be interesting to break costs down by discipline. Calculus hasn't changed in centuries, so there's no need for updated textbooks and there are free OER resources. So, one calculus section might have 0 text book costs, while another has a cost hundreds of dollars. Same goes for lots of other disciplines, including my own. I'll be switching to OER next time I teach American Government. I've never used the ancillary materials publishers included, so it won't require much work on my part. My only concern is that I imagine student are going to try to access the OER material on their phone, and in my experience, that's a terrible way to try to do any serious reading.

It seems that a lot of what's going on is that professors are using the books as not just a resource for students, but as a way to access all kinds of course materials--problem sets, powerpoint slides, and the like. I strongly disapprove of faculty who use this "course in a box" approach.

Here's a quote that exposes the game:

https://www.wired.com/story/digital-tex ... formation/
The knock against OER is that, well, you get what you pay for. “One faculty member told me only half-jokingly, that OER is like a puppy that’s free. You get the free puppy, but then you have to do all the work,” says Cengage’s Hansen, who argues that traditional publishers provide critical supporting materials, like assessment questions, that OER often lacks, and can push more regular updates.

That work? That's the job you're getting paid for, Prof. Sloth.

last thought on text books, they are expensive but it's because they are expensive to make. Some publishers and bookstores definitely take advantage of it, but often they're jacking up print costs to get students into ebooks, where they can keep them evergreen at no extra cost to the students.

i really think the future is the school library paying for the content, or making it part of the student activity fees

Perhaps you should be more concise in your writing.

The subject of my post can be boiled down to, "I filed a report". All other information conveyed is extra and just adds to the original subject.

You responded with a very non-specific post that something in my post was the root of the problems facing society.

Show me where in your post you specify what are the root of the problems facing society.

I figured it would be obvious that the root of the problems was referring to neo-Nazis on Instagram. Not you reporting it.

Man, I remember when I was a bit of an antagonistic poster back in the day. I guess I enjoyed it at the time, the online jousting, but I'm glad I've moved past there. Life's too short.

You guys are the ones cyber-bullying because I apparently don't fall in line with the groupthink. Is discourse not allowed in the political threads?

I never would have guessed when Phred first joined this forum, guns a blazing with “your mom” jokes, that his humor would eventually be too subtle for some, but here we are.
