The right-wing media was also able to bring the focus on immigration, Clinton emails, and scandals more generally to the broader media environment. A sentence-level analysis of stories throughout the media environment suggests that Donald Trump’s substantive agenda—heavily focused on immigration and direct attacks on Hillary Clinton—came to dominate public discussions.

Coverage of Clinton overwhelmingly focused on emails, followed by the Clinton Foundation and Benghazi. Coverage of Trump included some scandal, but the most prevalent topic of Trump-focused stories was his main substantive agenda item—immigration—and his arguments about jobs and trade also received more attention than his scandals.

you all should read this. it's a columbia journal review analysis of the media basically coming to the conclusion that breitbart led primary season which led fox news down that path. also, the right is more insular than ever before and traffics in misleading news, often with enough kernels of truth to seem credible. we're all doomed.

edit: thx pac

this will be labeled Obama's fault and the reason we need to pass tax reform.

Trump's Worst Deal
there's so many to choose from, but this one may take the cake; not only is it a horribly run failed project, there's this nugget:

But the Mammadov family, in addition to its reputation for corruption, has a troubling connection that any proper risk assessment should have unearthed: for years, it has been financially entangled with an Iranian family tied to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, the ideologically driven military force. In 2008, the year that the tower was announced, Ziya Mammadov, in his role as Transportation Minister, awarded a series of multimillion-dollar contracts to Azarpassillo, an Iranian construction company. Keyumars Darvishi, its chairman, fought in the Iran-Iraq War. After the war, he became the head of Raman, an Iranian construction firm that is controlled by the Revolutionary Guard. The U.S. government has regularly accused the Guard of criminal activity, including drug trafficking, sponsoring terrorism abroad, and money laundering. Reuters recently reported that the Trump Administration was poised to officially condemn the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.

I asked Garten how deeply the Trump Organization had looked into the Mammadov family’s political connections. Had it been concerned that Elton Mammadov, as a sitting member of parliament, might exploit his power to benefit the project? How much money had Ziya Mammadov invested in Elton’s company? Garten noted that he didn’t oversee the due-diligence process. “The people who did are no longer at the company,” he said. “I can’t tell you what was done in this situation.” He would not identify the former employees. When I asked him to provide documentation of due diligence, he said that he couldn’t share it with me, because “it’s confidential and privileged.”

No evidence has surfaced showing that Donald Trump, or any of his employees involved in the Baku deal, actively participated in bribery, money laundering, or other illegal behavior. But the Trump Organization may have broken the law in its work with the Mammadov family. The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, passed in 1977, forbade American companies from participating in a scheme to reward a foreign government official in exchange for material benefit or preferential treatment. The law even made it a crime for an American company to unknowingly benefit from a partner’s corruption if it could have discovered illicit activity but avoided doing so. This closed what was known as the “head in the sand” loophole.

HARRISBURG - The state's fiscal watchdog has proposed legalizing recreational marijuana in Pennsylvania - with heavy taxation.

Auditor General Eugene DePasquale said Monday during a press conference in Harrisburg that state legislators should strongly consider regulating and taxing marijuana to benefit from a booming industry expected to be worth $20 billion and employ more than 280,000 in the next decade.

"The revenue that could be generated would help address Pennsylvania's revenue and spending issue. But there is more to this than simply tax dollars and jobs," DePasquale said. "There is also social impact, specifically related to arrests, and the personal, emotional and financial devastation that may result from such arrests."

DePasquale is 45 years old and was just elected to a second term. Just saying. Wolf will be term limited as governor in 2022 should he win re-election and Toomey will be up for re-election in 2022. Two seats he is probably eyeing.

Any time you can simultaneously generate a ton of revenue, save money, create jobs, and slash crime, you've gotta take the opportunity to sit on the proposal for as long as humanly possible.

lets wait on that one.

in the meantime this off camera press conference, which is a regular press conference, but allows spice to cut employees with lines like, "ok youre not on camera, no need to do that," is fucking awful.

I am trying to think of the fanciest hotel in Berks. Lunching at Stokesay Castle (no where near a hotel in my memory, nor was the food that good). Alright, I checked the events calendar to see that there is a Double Tree by the arena. $151 a night, please.

White House on Trump's wiretapping claim: "No question" something happened

From CNN's Kevin Liptak:

Sean Spicer said Monday there was no doubt the Obama administration conducted some type of surveillance of Trump's campaign, even though there has been no evidence to support this.

"There's no question that something happened. The question is it, is it surveillance, is it a wiretap, or whatever?" Spicer said. "There has been enough reporting that strongly suggesting something occurred."

Spicer said the President asked Congress to investigate based on those unnamed reports.

"There's enough out there now that makes one wonder how some of this happened without the existence of surveillance," Spicer said, without naming any specific piece of evidence. Must mean the Russian connections, right

Spicer would not commit that the President would accept the results of the congressional investigation.
