it's worth a watch for sure. you might even love it. but it's hard for me to imagine it scratching anyone's top five of the year when the dust settles

yeah it was fine.

Hah! Surprised to see this come up, since I finally watched it just tonight. At first I really wanted to see it, then was pretty turned off by some reviews and opinions that made it sound a little too creaky and obvious and predictable.

Maybe it was all those things, but it was also very enjoyable (some reviews I had read had described it as intentionally humorless, in an effort to go against expectations for a Jordan Peele project. Nothing could be further from the truth). Probably good to step into it with lower expectations, though, so ignore my encouraging words.

I don't know about Oscar-worthy. Don't think it tries to be anything other than a well-constructed horror-comedy with a bit of social consciousness thrown in. Maybe in some years that's all it takes. Visually it has some nice images, but it's no Birdman.

maybe splitting hairs but I would liken it more to the first entry in a YA trilogy. the whole thing was pretty much a YA scramble of the book series which seems like an odd decision since I think the books fans are mostly like 30-50 year old guys? and there's only one young character? McConaughey and Elba were both awful (their fault or not, who knows), climax was a mess, overall was pretty weak but not nearly the formless blob I expected from reading previews. had a throughline and mostly made sense. it'll never make sense, though, why they didn't just do the Gunslinger with a horror director

also watched 13 Going On 30 (I guess it was a trade) which managed to be even more preposterous than most body swap movies but also had some good gags. overall wouldn't really recommend unless you're really fiending for some third tier 90s/aughts teen comedy

i agree about the young adult angle. i've never seen the maze runner but imagined this is what those movies are like. the fish out of water stuff was kind of cute. i was glad it was only 90 minutes.

It Comes at Night looks great and is well put together. Definitely has a lot of creepiness and some scares. The director aimed for an "openendedness" which you'll maybe find intriguing and maybe very frustrating. I lean toward the second, as it comes across in a "hey, I'm a filmmaker, not a writer" kind of way that excuses having to think things through.

One of many questions that is left unanswered:

[Reveal] Spoiler:
What, in the actual fuck , "comes at night."
