late last night I threw on Bad Company, which is a fairly straightforward spy thriller starring Chris Rock and Anthony Hopkins, just because I was surprised something like that could exist without me knowing about it. it was so bad

The first hour of Baby Driver was flawless. Didn't stick the landing

kudos to what they're going for but I don't think they pull it off, ultimately just a really frustrating movie

Mother! is batshit. Pretty straightforward allegory that just keeps pushing further into ultraviolence to prove its point. Really well shot, really great sound editing, really cool visual style, and it's genuinely frightening at times. Bardem and Pfeiffer are great. But it's one of the most harrowing film experiences I've ever sat through and I'll never do it again. I'm not even sure some of the most disgusting of the characters' actions have any real connection to the allegory it's trying to tell. And the implications of the moral are cynical and depressing. Aronofsky is a terrific filmmaker but he seems like such a dickwad

Agree. I didn't know who wrote/directed beforehand but right away picked up on the Sicario vibe. Not as much action as Sicario but much more disturbing.

Will be the great forgotten film of 2017

Finally got around to seeing this. Terrific film!

the boxing and fight scenes in Southpaw are some of the worst I've ever seen. rest of the movie is pretty shit too.

Saw a list on Facebook of the most disturbing films of all time and I'm disturbed just by looking at the movie descriptions

Chan is Missing is a mystery set in 1982 San Francisco in the Chinese Community. It's kinda like early Jarmusch, mixed with Charlie Chan movies mixed with Dashiell Hammett noir. Largely it's about what happens to the identify of Chinese Americans, how they see themselves, when they live in America. It's also tied to conflicts between PRC & Taiwan. I thought it was excellent. Highly recommended.

Kingsman 2 was fine but nowhere near as good as 1. Julianne Moore was too weird. I prefer Samuel L with a lisp

Watched Road House for the first time in probably 20 years last night. It holds up better than I expected.

i've decided to become the forum's "subversive film buff" i'll be periodically posting my letterboxd reviews + ratings in this thread all the time forever now. my reviews are concise and rarely actually give you any insight in to the film.
