Yup. When it was clear it would only be those two, they could have switched sides to avoid some slight to the GOP party.

This is a vote that could come back to haunt some Republicans though. The pay to play angle is a pretty easy one to exploit.

lol no it won't. It's over. There won't be elections in four years.

Come on guy, you sound like the left-wing brantt with this tired chicken little nonsense.

Yeah, presidents generally get wide latitude to have the cabinet they want. I would have liked her to have been voted down, but a vote approving a cabinet appointment is probably not going to burn anyone. There will be so much other shit to wade through over the next 4 years that we'll look back at this nomination vote and laugh at how unimportant it was.

It's a shame dajafi isn't here to weigh in. He loved to talk education policy, and would have enjoyed shooting me down here. :)

judging off his twitter timeline he appears heartened it was even this close. nominees are not usually voted down.

he also thinks it sucks that money appears to have played a role in her nomination, she was terrible education but it won't end well for them because she will embarrass this in some manner.

He's a fake. The GOP congress is more of a problem than Trump at this point.

Or they gave those two the OK to vote for their constituents because they knew they had the votes to get to 50. Sorry if I'm being cynical, but I'll believe someone in the GOP is courageous when something actually gets blocked.

This is all true, but in the meantime Congress will do what they want and get him to sign what they pass. This is what I worry about domestically.

I hope he keeps them from accomplishing their agenda, but I'm doubtful on that. I do find it slightly amusing how unprepared they seemed to be to govern. No one on their side thought they'd win, not Ryan, not McConnell and not Trump. They've basically squandered any semblance of a honeymoon period with Trump's crap during the transition and now the Republicans are squabbling among themselves about the ACA. I worry they'll get their acts together and Trump will rubberstamp lots of stuff once he gets past his 'promises'.

Yeh, I can see Trump is a fuck up, though he has more talents than people give him credit for. ACA is a minefield, but a lot of other environmental legislation and smaller items will pass quickly, and most likely with little notice because of the chaos in the WH. I'm also more worried about Bannon than Trump. If Trump ever does something horrendous, like attacking a country or using nukes, I think it will be Bannon that puts him up to it.

Getting kind of off track here, but I have to remind myself that in these waves of outrage we’re seeing in protests and me not talking to anyone who thinks these things are good ideas in my day to day life that these aren’t 25/75 issues.

They asked the suspending immigration from terror prone regions question again post implementation, and it's 44%-50%, so a net -12 swing from their bungled roll out.

maybe it wasn't a bungled rollout. Maybe it was human decency rearing its head as people became educated about the issue.

The "Saturday Night Live" spoof of White House press secretary Sean Spicer hit a nerve with the White House spokesman and President Trump, according to a new report.

"Trump doesn't like his people to look weak," a top Trump donor told Politico two days after Melissa McCarthy portrayed an aggressive Spicer firing insults at journalists, chowing down on gum and busting out a super soaker during a press breifing<sic>.

But President Trump was most bothered by the fact that Spicer was portrayed by a woman, according to the Politico report.

The 1950's what a time. The greatest generation was just home from war, and the Baby Boomers were kids living the (white) America dream. Oh if we could just turn back the clock.

FWIW, The Hill report that I lifted this from misspelled briefing, so I added the SIC. Misspelling, everybody's doing it.

You well may be correct but I will note that both of them expressed serious reservations during the nomination hearing and in subsequent debate. I think it was Senator Murkowski who actually warned that DeVos "not yet count on my vote". I doubt they tried to bring anybody with them but they were pretty candid publicly in their opposition.

My thoughts on the Devos confirmation:

1. She seemed unqualified for the position to me.

2. Since I no longer have a dog in the fight, you can discount this next comment but of all the the things that actually affect a kid's education, I think the identity of the U.S. Secretary of Education is probably something like less than 1/10th of 1 percent. I mean I couldn't even remember anyone who had been Secretary of Education since maybe Lamar Alexander. I know there is a view that all of Trump's outrages are the most outrageous outrage in all of history but honestly I think there are about 100 things I hate more about Trump and his administration and its impact than who the Secretary of Education is (to be candid I kinda thought he was going to withdraw her nomination in a deal with the Dems where he assured himself of getting something he wanted even more). As jh pointed out, Devos is more of an establishment Republican than a Trump supporter.

3. I think the notion that there will be any "electoral blowback" on this is laughable. The American swing vote population barely has a 6 week attention span when it comes to politics. Let alone a 2, 4 or 6 year attention span.

This would be incredible, and he'd probably order a drone strike on 30 Rock, but it's probably too mean spirited just for the sake of being mean vs. some sort of commentary or satire

One idea I saw on Reddit was for Baldwin to be in his robe watching Rosie play Trump on TV and reacting to it. He'd absolutely lose his shit
