Hell, just take the kid to the library and let him pick whatever interests him in the slightest.

Other lost classics to consider--Ursula Leguin's Wizard of Earthsea Trilogy, and of course Madeleine L'Engle's Wrinkle in time.

Lot of good suggestions here..

Guys read is an excellent website (and puts out equally excellent books) run by Jon (Stinky cheese Man) Scieszka that can help identify books that boys might like.

Ethan Canin's A Doubter's Almanac took a long time to get where it was going but was ultimately worthwhile. You don't have to know a lot about math (I certainly don't) to enjoy it, but if you do certain parts will probably be a lot more entertaining. A lot of critical reviews are about how the main character treats and regards women (poorly) and how his son (who narrates the second half of the book) fights to avoid this but in some ways continues it. I don't quite get the criticism since it's one of the main themes of the book and the author obviously recognizes and doesn't endorse it. But I can understand how the behavior would be objectionable. I guess I don't have to worry about that with this audience though.

My son (he's 10) ate up Percy Jackson and Harry Potter (obviously).

Right now is reading The Hunger Games trilogy.

Artemis Fowl was a good series.

My son also liked Captain Underpants. There also was a series called Origami Yoda or something like that.

Recently finished two books that do NOT have shit in their title, but are essentially about the world going to shit, or becoming dominated by humankind, which itself may be going to shit: Martin Ford's The Rise of the Robots and Yuval Harari's Sapiens.

2nd is better-written; 1st is more ... pragmatic, though Valley denizen Ford is predictably squeamish about the economic implications of his principal thesis, which, to simplify, is that the contribution that people make to production processes is dwindling, and soon enough won't amount to much.

One of Harari's themes is a favorite of mine; that humankind's ability not merely to imagine, but to give fealty to concepts made mostly of our imagination - stuff like religion, and money, and "corporate persons" - is practically indispensible to why we've thrived as a species.

Starting Adam Hochschild's Spain in Our Hearts: Americans in the Spanish Civil War. It's one of those historical periods, and a collection of historical characters, I only know from too many old movies.

The story of the defense of a doomed republic seemed in the spirit of our current mean season.

Strangers in Their Own Land was really well done. Although this focused on Louisiana, seems like PSUsarge was spot on.

On to Hillbilly Elegy

Reading James Michener for the first time. Never really knew much about him or that he wrote historical fiction. Yes he is awesome.
