I'm sure that one or more of you on here have read the first two books of the Kingkiller Chronicles. (If you haven't, and you are in any way a fan of fantasy books, I HIGHLY recommend them.)

Well, Lin-Manuel Miranda is a huge fan of them and he has reached a deal to produce the film/TV adaptations of the books, as well as the short stories/novellas from that universe.

http://www.tor.com/2016/11/29/lin-manuel-miranda-the-kingkiller-chronicle-adaptation-patrick-rothfuss/

If you've read the books, you know how much of a role music/poetry plays in the stories. And if you're just a fan of Hamilton, the tone of the song "The Story of Tonight" was inspired by scenes with Kvothe (the main character) and his drinking buddies from the first book.

I'm struggling to finish Name of the Wind, but it may be partially me tiring of the Audible narrator. Also the main character so far seems like kind of a jerkoff?

I can only listen to certain types of books on Audible. Name of the Wind would definitely NOT be one of them. Way too many details.

And Kvothe is definitely a bit of a jerk, but consider his life experience and age in most of that book too. Seems like being a jerk would be a reasonable response.

Finished Spain in our Hearts. Doomed idealism has a sort of romance to it, but it's not so hot for the holiday season.

Also I may strive never to buy any product from any branch of the Texaco organization ever again.
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

Brandon Sanderson completed his first draft of Book 3 of the Stormlight Archive last night. Its entitled "Oathbringer" and is on target for a Fall 2017 release.

He says its 461,223 words. Good god. They'll play with the font and pare it down a bit, but I'm pretty sure that's like 1200 hardback pages.

His output rate is simply amazing.

I've yet to get into any of his solo stuff. I wanted to after finishing the first two KK books, but lost steam.
Quick Google shows that GoGo is wrong with regards to the Kiwi and the Banana.

It's excellent. Stormlight will be ten books, so you have plenty of time.

Nearly all of his fantasy books are mildly (and to varying degrees) interconnected by sharing the same universe (the Cosmere), but so far they all work separately. Start with Mistborn and see if you like it--it's the most approachable of his stories IMO. It's the first in a trilogy but has enough of a complete story that if you never pick up another Sanderson book you'll be okay.

What I like about his stuff is that his magic systems are all theoretically based in science, or at least their version of science. But they all have some type of physics/chemistry aspect (e.g., matter/energy is neither created nor destroyed, every force has a counterforce, etc).

Arcanum Unbound? I've got it on my Kindle but haven't started yet. So many things on my list right now.

Some of the works inside it aren't new. I've already read (and re-read) Emperor's Soul, Mistborn: Secret History, Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell, and Sixth of the Dusk. I'll admit to being a Sanderson fanboy, but all of them are enjoyable IMO. Secret History in particular was one of the most fun (and surprising because I was totally unspoiled) reads I've had in quite some time.

I have like 60 pages left of Hillbilly Elegy and I really do not understand the praise yet. Should have read The Unwinding.

Yeah, I was really unimpressed by this. It was finely written, but offers little that couldn't have been completely gleaned in a long form piece and barely extrapolates to the rust belt or appalachia at large.

I understand that wasn't its original intent but all of the 'this will help you understand why trump won' is off the mark. It's like 280 pages to tell you that you need some loving, supportive people in your life and that the real world is about connections you make.

I think that's pretty fair. I think the reason it resonated for me is I had just read more wide-ranging and empirical stuff like Strangers in Their Own Land, and this put a face on it.

Don't really remember the footnotes but that's a top five book for me

Free $25 Amazon credit if you sign up for an Audible trial. The confirmation email came within two minutes for me.

Use the livingsocial deal in the article and get two free months of Audible instead of one—comes with one free download per month and unlimited streaming of their stations. It doesn’t seem to be restricted to new users because I’ve had multiple Audible trials in the past. Just make sure you remember to cancel at the end of the trial.

Yeah you "buy" the code from livingsocial or groupon, apply it at Audible, and then sign in with your amazon prime account.
