Phantom Tollbooth is the best book of all time. Discuss.

there's this guy Tai Lopez who seems to be a huckster of sorts and his big thing is saying he reads a book a day, which is possible, but you wouldn't have time to make goofy aspirational Youtubes. he said that he's not really an advocate of reading the whole thing, just scanning it and reading chapters or random sections that seem interesting to you. obviously that's fine, but don't say you read a book a day if that's what you're actually doing.

this type of thought has taken hold, I believe, with the Silicon valley type - not all of course, but I just heard an interview with angel investor Naval Ravikant where he says to do the exact same thing.

as a practice I'm not wholly opposed to it - I do it in bookstores all the time, but again, I don't say that I've read that book when I've just read 30 pages or whatever. It leads to this really superficial understanding of the material, and lacks nuance. granted, these people are probably talking about business books, which are generally about 85-98% filler.

I remember loving Phantom Tollbooth. That Milo was alright. Never got to infinity though.

I found a copy of the Phantom Tollbooth a few months ago and went through the first half of it in like an hour. Still great.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

Started reading The Martian last week. Absolutely outstanding. Only halfway through.

Just don't sync with wifi on your Kindle. I do it all the time for books that I haven't finished in the checkout period..

You can also download it to your PC through Amazon, then put it on your Kindle via USB at any time. I may or may not have a large folder in Google Drive of library ebooks.

Marcus Aurelius' Meditations is really hard to read/listen to. Can't wait until I'm done tbh.

I'm reading The Racketeer by Grisham. Haven't read one of his books in forever. Read all of them as the came out back when I was in middle school and high school, figured I'd check out some of his recent stuff. It's interesting enough, but it's not really all that good. It's a quick read though and I want to finish it to find out how it ends.

Anyone have a recommendation for something next? I have a que of heavier stuff that I'm just not ready to get into, so I'm looking for something lighter.

I read it through the library but may have to purchase it. I'd like to read it again. I thought it was great and am psyched for the movie. It sounds like they did a good job with it. I'll probably take the kids.

Finally started Franzen's Purity. first six pages are killer!

Finished Alice McDermott's Child of my heart. Nothing earth shattering, but she's consistently one of the best writers about late adolescence and Catholic families out there. That Night is probably a shorter, stronger work. For some reason I've never read her National Book Award winning Charming Billy. Might have to hunt that out down the road.

I was 1st or 2nd on my library's waitlist for the e-book, but I got it last month on Amazon instead when it dropped to $1.99. So glad I have my own copy.

PTOITWCFTPP, don't wait... just read it. It's that good. A lot of times reading the book first causes the movie to suffer, but I can't imagine that'll be the case for this one. My guess is that getting the extra dose of hard science in the book will probably help the movie experience.

On the fence about getting a copy of Elvis Costello's Unfaithful Music and Disappearing Ink. I'm a fan of autobiography, and a fan of Costello, but nearly 700 pages is a lot of anything, & especially of "rock musicians" (though he's got more going on than that narrowish category).

But at about $15 for the kindle edition, it's not exactly a huge commitment. Somebody convince me
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)
