Really liking The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin. I have no idea how accurate it is, but the translation is highly readable.

Not sure I'm as high on the book as a whole as a lot of people are, but Owen Meany ascends to my Mount Rushmore of book characters

Quit on The Martian after 30 pages

Oh I would definitely recommend it. Just thought it meanders and that a few of the elements didn't work exceptionally well. But the good stuff is great

I'm finally giving James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room a read. I ordered it last night.

doing the book on tape with Ta-Nehisi Coates doing the reading of his Between the World and Me. he's a fascinating guy, he's such a critical thinker and is able to dissect things with a poetic simplicity. So many quotable lines.

Yeah what's up with that? Too much of a Castaway feel?

I also felt like it was really specific and a lot of that stuff went over my head. I would keep with it. It's a much easier read once they have NASA chapters

That's fine. I'm only surprised b/c you're the first person I've encountered who (1) was interested enough to give it a shot and (2) didn't love it immediately.

Personally, I love well-written, scientifically accurate sci-fi in the vein of Arthur Clarke, so The Martian was right up my alley. To each their own.

Get in the routine of reading for 15-20 minutes in bed before you turn out the light. I always did that when I was a kid, but I got out of the habit during law school until I started again about 8 years ago (right when I left private practice). Now it's so ingrained in me that I have trouble going to sleep unless I've read for a while.

Once you get into a book, you'll probably find yourself picking it up at random times during the day instead of turning on the TV or using the computer/phone.

The flip side of that is it can be hard to get into a more dense/difficult book if you're exclusively reading at bed time.

Along those same lines, I love having the kindle app on my phone. I used to be an avid reader and after having kids and too much life going on, I got out of the routine. I've been getting back into it this year for real, and being able to have my book synch between my phone, tablet and ereader is great. For my phone, instead of opening Twitter/ Facebook / Reddit / bsg and mindlessly scrolling when I have free time, I make it a point to open my book and read a chapter or two instead. Helps me to keep momentum going on a book if I get bogged down, or can't find dedicated time to just sit and read.

Yup. And you'll always have your book on the crapper as an alternative to firing up Candy Crush.

good advice guys, thanks. the trouble is all in getting started and i had wondered how much stimulation i could get in 20 minutes or a few chapters worth at a time. i don't want to force myself to read, but i guess if the text is interesting enough, i'd keep at it. most of the books i have lined up are fairly dense so it seems to be sort of an engrossing task. i'm really interested in tackling them though

Emotional Genius; Emotional Intelligence. Both are books on discovering the poetry of the soul.
Ensouling Language. It's about adjectivally crafting the written word with that feeling and soul.
Primal Body, Primal Mind

there's others in the queue, and I'd like to go back and read Prometheus Rising as well, been a long time..

yeah, maybe find some books that aren't centered on you. Seems like with how you exercise and everything, taking a break from yourself could be good
