Yesterday, America's best pizzamakers convened in NYC for the Caputo Cup competition.

Best NY Style Pizza was won by Norma Knepp, who makes the world's best $2 slice at Norma's Pizza in Roots Country Market in Manheim (Lancaster) PA.

It was considered a big upset that she beat the big name pros, but if you go have that pie, you'd know it's as good as any.

Get out there on a Tuesday and try the Detroit style, too. She's getting older and can't do this forever.

Jerk Oceano in Lantana FL doesn't have pizza on the menu every night, but it's pretty spectacular

went to Brigantessa for dinner on saturday. The girl and I got a great pizza. They do neapolitan style pizza. Buffalo Mozz, Prosciutto di Parma, dressed arugula salad and shaved parm on top. One of the better pizzas i've had. Wasn't a wet soggy mess in the middle like most neapolitans can get. This stayed firm throughout. They offer to cut the pizza for you but serve it as a whole pie and you just rip and tear at it.

We've gotten other pizza there before and it maxed out as 'good.' This was a legit great pizza. We also got some raviolis in a pecorino broth that was pretty good, too.

Got up to Collegeville Bakery yesterday. My God, what a brutal trek up Ridge Pike from KoP to get there.

But the pies - EXCELLENT. A nice rendition of Detroit style, and an authentic NY pie. Lots of other kinds I didn't try, whole, half, or by the slice. Somebody knows dough.

Image

The NY pie was thin, crisp, rigid, and topped with spicy cup pepperoni. Perfect cornicione. My only criticism is that the round pie needed more top heat to brown up the cheese.

Went with the salsiccia pie and the meatball appetizer. Ate half of each and dipped my pizza crusts into the cheese sauce they give you with the meatball, then ate the rest today for lunch. You can't beat it

Snap Custom Pizza. Ardmore, Exton, Philly. It's the new Peace A Pizza.

Good pie, but not as good as other assembly-line joints like MOD and RapiDough.

Stroke free, and back into our new office digs in Old City, I hit Capofitto for their spicy pepperoni pie, which was tremendous. We moved from Center City with Zavino right near our office to here, and I think it's an upgrade.

Nice. Yeah, I love Zavino, but Capofitto is second only to Scuola Vecchia (Delray Beach FL) among the Neapolitans I've inhaled

What's a perfect spring Saturday?

Drive up to East Harlem, go eat a $12 pizza at Patsy's, where pies have come from the coal oven for 80 years. Then drive 10 minutes over to The Cloisters and see some great art in an airy castle high on a hill over the Hudson. Afterwards, hike in Innwood Park, the only natural forest in all of NYC.

And street parking, no meters, available at all destinations.

I don't know how many times I've burnt the roof of my mouth on pizza, but add one to that number after tonight.

Pro tip: eat pizza upside down
